Classroom Needs

Our classrooms are in need of (1.) hand sanitizer, especially with cold and flu season upon us. If you are able, could you please send a bottle or two to school with your kiddo? We greatly appreciate it!

Also, we do a lot of activities and assignments on the iPad which also requires the use of (2.) earbuds or headphones and it is important each student has a pair. Could you please make sure your kiddo has a set that either stays in their backpack or locker at school? They, by no means, need to be an expensive pair. Dollar Tree and the Target Dollar Spot usually have some ranging from $1 to $3. Thank you so much!

Socks for Seniors!

Please join Indian Creek's NEHS (National Elementary Honor Society) in collecting socks and toiletries for seniors at a local nursing home. We will be collecting items from December 1st through December 19th. This is such a wonderful way for our students to give back to our community!

It's time to order your yearbooks!

Yearbook orders can be placed online at balfour.com. Fifth grade dedications can also be completed on the Balfour website. The cost is $10. Please contact Mrs. Sorrells if you have any questions!

Lunch Bunch & Open Tutoring

Hello parents!! In an effort to help kiddos who are struggling to get their work completed and turned in on time, or who might need additional help with understanding what they're learning, we are offering a "Lunch Bunch" and "Open Tutoring" times throughout the week. Below, you will find the times and locations they are able to come in and get additional help with any late or missing assignments.

Academic Tutoring

Fifth grade teachers are offering tutoring on Wednesday afternoons, from 3:05-3:35. Your child's teacher will notify you if they would like your student to attend tutoring. If you feel your child needs to attend tutoring, for either reading or math, please contact your student's homeroom teacher.

Missing and Late Work

Some 5th graders are really struggling getting their assignments turned in on time. Parents, we are asking for you help in stressing the importance of being responsible and getting work done by the due dates we give. If a student is missing an assignment, they will receive a Missing Work Notice in their folder. Please sign these notices and encourage your child to complete the assignment. Missing work is given a zero in the gradebook until it is turned in. We do not want our kids to develop a habit of failing to turn in homework before they go to middle school!

Go ahead and update!

Technology has given us the go-ahead to update all student iPads to the new iOS 8.1 as of October 22nd. Please have your kiddo update at home.

This week in ELAR

This week we will continue learning about sensory language and visualizing. The big questions we will still focus on are:1. How can the author's use of sensory language enhance your understanding of a text? and 2. How does the way we use language affect the way we communicate? We will end this unit with a test on Friday. We will also continue to differentiate between commonly confused homophones, such as: its, it's, your, you're and their, there and they're. Our academic vocabulary for this week is: sensory language, visualize, elaborate and word choice.

Please continue to make sure your kiddo is doing their daily reading log and logging at least 20 minutes of reading a day and completing iStation on Wednesdays! I have really enjoyed reading their logs each week and seeing their thought process!

This Week in Social Studies

This week, we will be examining various events that led to the American Revolution, such as the French and Indian War, the Boston Tea Party and the Intolerable Acts. The big question we will focus on is, "What British actions angered the colonists?" We will be able to bring our knowledge from Language Arts and synthesize information, draw conclusions, summarize and make predictions as we continue learning about our history.

The students are able to access the social studies curriculum, Social Studies Alive, from their iPads (and should also have a shortcut saved to their home screen). Below is the information they will use to log-in.

User Name: last name, first initial

Password: ID # (numbers only)

Big Ears

Weekly, we will send you a link from a parenting resource called, "Love and Logic. I believe you will appreciate the information as much as I have.

Parents, your children were given an envelope with information regarding our class parties and upcoming events. The room moms have asked for $15 in order to offset the cost of food and supplies for your child. Thank you for helping with this.
