Mrs. Poliszczuk's First Grade Class
weekly update
September 9, 2016
In writing, we discussed the idea that everyone can be a writer. Writing includes pictures, labels and sentences. We shared why we write (to express thoughts, share ideas, ask questions) and what we write (stories, poems, thank you cards, lists). In addition, students practiced adding details through words and illustrations. We made a connection to a story we read last week, Patches Lost and Found. In this story, students learned that drawing before words is ok and may actually help them to be able to express their ideas more clearly.
In math, students played Compare Dots, Compare, and Double Compare in order to compare quantities. While observing, I noted if students needed to count each dot or object to find the total or if they knew some basic facts. I also made note of the strategies students used to find the total. Students also played Plus or Minus 1 Bingo. In this game, students practiced fluency in adding or subtracting one from a given number.
In Social Studies, students learned the differences between human made and physical features. Students also located the continents and oceans using maps and a globe.
