Why Occupational Standards?

"The development of occupational standards by the people doing the job enables them to take ownership of their occupation (professional behaviour, knowledge, skills and abilities for competent practice)" (C.C.H.R.S., 2010, p. 3).


For ECE's:

-Offering a foundation for career development

-Identifying training gaps

-Enhancing occupational recognition


For Employers:

-Identifying key tasks and roles

-Identifying professional development needs

-Facilitating objective job descriptions

-Providing guidance for recruitment


For ECE Faculty:

-Identifying areas where expertise is required

-Providing the basis for curriculum.

To whom do these occupational standards apply?

The standards are meant to cover the broad range of tasks that can be performed by ECEs.


"The standards are not meant to replace individual job descriptions, but are to be used for guidance in defining skill levels and knowledge for ECEs in specific settings or positions" (C.C.H.R.S., 2010, p. 4).

What do occupational standards consist of?

The Child Care Human Resources Sector Council: Build, share knowledge, foster the development of the ECE field & provide leadership

Scope

As a part of the holistic approach, ECEs form collaborative partnerships with families and honour the family's role as primary caregiver and respect each family's composition, language and culture (C.C.H.R.S., 2010).
