Junior News
Parents and Juniors: We have had several instances where juniors left campus during the day without checking out and without permission from administration. Students are reminded that they are to stay on the CCCC campus until they check out for the day.
Checking out is a wonderful privilege. Please do not lose that privilege. Further occurrences will result in parental contact and disciplinary action. --Mr. Strope

English
English I Honors: This week, students continued to work on their poetry booklets of figurative devices. They also were introduced to their second formal essay assignment, a poetry explication. They have several upcoming due dates. Their Poetry Booklets are due Wed. Sept 25. Their Poetry Explication essays are due on Fri. Sept 27.
Next week, we will finish up our poetry unit with our study of Poe, Frost, Hughes, and Angelou. We will have our test on the poetry unit on Friday, Sept. 27.
English IV Honors: Students have continued to hone their analysis skills as they work through The Canterbury Tales. In addition, they have been looking at Medieval culture through Chaucer’s satirical eye. They finished their 10th ACT Prep vocabulary unit and will take a cumulative test on Friday September 27. Finally, Students turned in their 1st Senior Project journal entry and time log. Next week, as they finish up the Middle English Period, students will begin their 2nd major essay: contextual historical analysis.
Regarding the Graduation Project: Students have had the required forms since the beginning of the semester. The six-week grading period and several students are still missing forms. The zero for the missing items will be replaced when the forms are submitted.
There are a few students who have yet to secure a mentor. The final due date for all forms, products, and mentor log is November 26, and presentations will take place on December 5th. Please help your child manage his or her time to ensure they are prepared to complete this task in a timely manner.
Math
Honors Math 2: Thank you for coming to Open House! If you would like to join my Remind group, text @hm2period1 or @hm2period2 to 81010.
Students are only allowed to use the website Desmos while completing online assessments on Deltamath/IXL/StudyIsland/etc. Students that use other sites to complete an assessment will receive an automatic zero.
Next week students will begin Unit 3 Advanced Functions. We will cover radical functions, absolute value functions, and variation. Students will have an online assignment and a group assignment next week.
Honors Math 4: We will finish the Unit on Exponentials and Logarithms. The unit test will be on Wednesday. We will then start Trigonometry.
Social Studies
Civics and Economics Honors: We have been busy studying the philosophies behind our Constitution. This week we have looked at the Enlightenment philosophers John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, and Baron de Montesquieu. We have examined, in depth, the concepts of the Social Contract, Natural Rights, and Separation of Powers. We also studied the Magna Carta, English Bill of Rights, and the Iroquois Confederacy to see how these documents and agreements influenced our Founding Fathers. It has been a lot to learn and absorb, but I think they have done a great job!
We ended the week with a Gallery Walk, looking at all the Enlightenment philosophers and their ideas that have influenced our government. We have a test on Monday! They will need to study over the weekend. They have their study guides, and I have made a Quizlet for them, as well. Next week we will finish up our lesson on the Philosophies of the Constitution by looking at the Mayflower Compact and the Declaration of Independence- and what exactly led us to rebel against England.
AP World History: We are done with China! The ancient civilization, that is. We had our test on this ground-breaking civilization on Thursday and Friday of this week. There is a homework assignment over the weekend. Students will need to research (on their own) the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome. These will be the last two civilizations we will learn about before transitioning into our tested curriculum. I have posted a template the students can use to record their research and findings. We are tying these 'newer' civilizations to the Eight Traits of a Civilization they were tested on with our very first river-valley civilizations, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Indus River Valley. It is amazing to see how these diverse and varied cultures still have common traits, despite being years and miles apart. Ask your students for details, it is truly remarkable!
With their research we will have a class project called Autopsy of an Empire, where they break down the Greek and Roman civilizations and determine exactly what led to their demise. This project will be done in class next week, with little homework outside of class.
AH-1: We have finally completed Unit 1: The Nation’s Beginnings. We tested Friday on European Exploration, Colonization, the Causes of the American Revolution, the American Revolution, & the US Constitution.
Students scored very well on the Unit test and we will move forward into Unit 2: The New Nation. We will examine the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, the growth of political parties, and the War of 1812. Our pacing will be much quicker going forward and we will cover the remaining units of study in @ 1.5 weeks each. Students are reminded to check Teams for assignments & resources.
Science
Chem Honors: We did the Flame Test Lab on Friday and are taking Unit 4 Test on Monday. We will be starting Unit 5 on Tuesday.
APES: We did Shannon Index Biodiversity Lab which is due Monday (A day) and Tuesday (B day). Students will also have Unit 2 Quiz next class and finish the coming week with Island Biodiversity Lab.
Biology Honors: We are studying genetics and will continue through Wednesday. We will then get into the double helix and crack the code of life!
