We are thrilled with the success of our first full year of Heartschool courses and are excited to offer a few favorites and some brand-new classes.
This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to attend virtual morning time Tuesday through Friday at no cost! Our passionate and creative teachers have designed classes that engage and appeal to all ages. Families can sign up for one specific grade band or high-interest level course on our Heartschool Survey beginning on August 7th. Sign-ups are open for the entire semester. Second-semester courses will have a new survey to sign up for in December/January.
Heartschool meets Tuesday through Friday from 8:30-9 AM and a second offering from 9-9:30 AM. Your student may sign up for an 8:30 AM and 9 AM course. However, they can only sign up for one course per time slot. Sessions begin on August 16th, 2023, and finish on January 19th, 2024, for the first semester.
8:30- 9 AM COURSES
Little Social Studies/Science Thinkers -- Grades K-2nd
Get ready to start off your day with friends, fun, and learning in Little Social Studies/Science Thinkers! We will cover the main topics of many 1st-grade social studies standards in the first semester. Then, we will cover the main topics of many 1st-grade science standards in the second semester. Our social studies sessions will cover topics like responsible citizenship, families long ago and today, holidays around the world, community economics, geography, pilgrims and Native Americans. Our science sessions will cover light and sound, space, survival of living things and weather. Join our Google Classroom for optional worksheets, craftivities, and a printable student workbook that goes with each unit.

Multisensory Literacy- Welcome to the Major Leagues of Reading -- All grades welcome, but focus is foundational reading standards for K-5
In this course, we will address the "rules" of English with a twist to build conceptual knowledge utilizing multiple sensory inputs and outputs to build literacy.

California Social Studies -- 4th Grade
Join the adventure as we journey through California's rich history! Students will learn about geography, regions of California, state symbols, California Indians, Spanish exploration and colonization of California, Spanish missions, the Mexican rancho period, the Gold Rush, statehood, agriculture, industries and so much more! Live sessions will be engaging and interactive and include slides, videos, activities and games, writing, read-aloud, drawing, singing, and even show and tell. Students will build confidence as they learn online, make friends and have FUN doing it! In the fall we will read Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell and in the spring, we will read By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman. This is a year-long course and will meet the state standards for fourth-grade Social Studies.

2nd-3rd Grade Exploring Language Arts Course
Join us for some fun with language arts! In this 2nd-3rd grade standards-based class, we will explore reading comprehension techniques, shared writing, grammar, parts of speech, and so much more! These lessons will help your child feel more confident in their language arts skills. This class is also ideal for students who need a little help filling in any learning gaps they may need.

Novel Study: Wonder for grades 4-6
In this standards-based literature course, students will read the story of August and discover how we all are Wonders. Through this engaging story about a little boy who is different, we will have collaborative discussions about empathy, compassion, friendship, and resolving conflict with our peers. This course also includes academic vocabulary, figurative language activities, response to text, comparing and contrasting, and writing a summary of the story including story elements such as Characters, Setting, Problem, Significant Events, Resolution, and Theme. Your student will love the story, Wonder!

Story Time With Ms. Beth! -- Grades 1st-2nd
Story Time with Ms. Beth is an English Language Arts class for first and second-grade students designed to gently instill a love of reading. Lessons will be delivered through age-appropriate but compelling stories, engaging learning activities, social-skill-building exercises, and songs reinforcing learning, all while maintaining the highest academic standards. Story Time with Ms. Beth aims to provide young students with an early positive experience, reinforcing a life-long love of reading and supporting students' sustained social and academic achievements into adulthood.

Become a Backyard Naturalist! Grades 1-5
Discover the habitat that is right outside your door and learn about the animals and plants that live in your backyard, neighborhood, or community. We will explore animal classification and plant identification, including common vertebrate and invertebrate animals as well as California plants and trees. We will answer questions about our ecosystem and the interaction between humans, plants, animals, and environmental forces like weather and climate.

Applied Digital Skills I Grades 6-8
In this hands-on class for 6th-8th graders, students will improve their digital skills while using Google tools to create projects independently and as part of a group. Students will create and present slideshows about various topics, use drawing tools to make artwork, learn to use Google tools for organization, and more in a relaxed, collaborative environment. Students need to have access to their Heartland Google Account for participation.

Morning Time - Grades K-2
Join our fun morning calendar class focusing on calendar skills, phonics, and early math skills. We will finish each class with a short story and an opportunity to discuss story elements. I am familiar with using multiple types of alternate forms of communication. This class will be a fun, engaging, 4-day-a-week class. Recommended for K-2nd grade.

Junior Detectives -- Grades 3rd-6th
Be prepared to awaken your inner detective with this fun, engaging standards-based course! Together, we will delve into the past and explore some mysteries throughout history, examine some lighthearted crime scene investigations, solve family-friendly mystery cases by sorting through clues, and explore Mystery Science Units in this highly engaging class that is geared towards 3rd-6th grades. We will even incorporate hands-on activities including making secret messages and fingerprinting! In addition to Science and Social Studies standards, this course will also incorporate language arts elements including reading, writing, context clues, and making inferences.

Intro to Algebra and Geometry Grades 6-12
In this Algebra/ Geometry skills class, we will be reviewing state standards at an easy pace. We will learn simple and effective strategies to master basic skills and extend your knowledge in Algebra 1 and geometry. The focus will be on Equation solving, linear equations, systems of equalities, introduction to functions, polynomials, expressions, exponents, and radicals. There will be daily homework using IXL (offered through the school, I can send out logins). And I will be sending out Daily emails. Morning Meeting: TK-1st Grade Standards Based Course
Let's start the school day together with a fun morning meeting with other Heartland students. We will read a nature poem, have calendar time, play with math and beginning reading concepts, learn grade-level social studies and science concepts, and much more. Our morning meeting will be an interactive class where students are encouraged to participate and learn together. Students will be introduced to and work on TK-1st grade I CAN STATEMENTS in a fun and engaging setting.

Bringing HS Course Standards To Life With Current Events & News -- Grades 9-12
In this engaging and exciting class, high school students will be challenged to make their class standards come alive as seen in the world around them in the news and subject matter articles. If you've ever asked, "Why do we have to learn this stuff?" or "When will I ever see or use this again?" I have good news! That time is now and it will seriously make even the most tediously boring course standards come to life in a fun way. Think of it as your Tuesday through Friday chance to start your day by seeing what you are studying come to life in the world around you!

Throughout the semester our class will read a story and learn about the parts of a narrative. I will model my own narrative. We will spend the next sessions working on a step of the narrative writing process. We are also writing a science fiction story as an entire class. We have already written 2 books! Word Detectives --3rd Grade and Up
In this interactive class, we will use the Merriam-Webster Word of the Day book, and the MultiSensory interactive notebook to look at the Morphology to better understand the words around us.
If you would like to create an Interactive Notebook along with me here are the materials you will need:
-A notebook
-Pencil or other writing tool
-Colored Pencils, crayons, or other drawing tools
( If you would like to print the pages I do have those available via email)
These materials are NOT required to have some fun and become a word detective!
Word Detectives study words and look closely at them to see if we can discover more about them. Join us in this super fun class where we will use multisensory strategies to help unlock secrets and learn more about the world around us!

Writing Lab: Logical Fallacies -- Grades 7th -12th
Join us as we learn how to spot and avoid errors in reasoning, bring conversations graciously back to the point, and write scripts. Students will learn about fallacies such as the straw man, red herring, part-to-whole, and the ad hominem attack. Deep listening will be a key component in this class. Let me help your child with the daily practice of learning letters and their corresponding sounds! Repetition and consistency are key to learning letters. In this class, we will develop fine motor skills with manipulatives, and learn letter formations and letter sounds through songs, drawing & more!
