FHS Welcomes Ms. Melony Martinez to the Panther Family
Melony Martinez has joined the FHS faculty to teach Spanish. She received her Master's in Spanish and LALS certification from the University of Louisville in 2013. She is an Omega Nu Lambda graduate of EKU with a Master's in Teaching K-12 and a Magna Cum Laude graduate with honors from Midway College with a BA in Business Administration, International Marketing, and a minor in Spanish. She recently received a certification in Online Course Development and Teaching from EKU in April 2020 and collaborated in the design of the Spanish 101/102 e-campus courses this year which she teaches there.
She has lived and worked in different parts of the world, including Mexico and Pakistan. She was a corporate manager in retail management, she managed her own businesses, she did banking and mortgage lending and interpreted for the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts and for the Cabinet for Family Services.
She has two daughters, Maria, and Olivia. Maria is a graphic designer and illustrator for Adidas and Olivia is a senior engineering student at Purdue University.
Shortly after she finished her master’s degree at the University of Louisville, she moved to Richmond, Kentucky where she began teaching Spanish at EKU as an adjunct professor. She continues working there today as an adjunct professor as her passion is teaching Spanish.
She is a Dean’s Citation and an Alice Eaves Barnes Award recipient. She is the first ever to receive this distinguished award which she was nominated for by her professors at the University of Louisville. She is also the first graduate to ever do a final senior project with the approval of the IRB which required surveying human subjects to complete. She is a Sigma Delta Pi Spanish National Honor Society member, a member of AATSP, and KWLA member.
She currently resides in Georgetown, Kentucky. Aside from her adjunct teaching position at EKU, she is in her fifth year of teaching Spanish at the high school level and is excited to be here at Frankfort High School. In her free time, she likes to spend every moment possible with her family, especially her two daughters, traveling and cooking. Fun fact - She likes to ride motorcycles too! She states, “Life is too short not to enjoy the blessings that make memories for a lifetime.”
About FHS, Martinez says, "I am super excited to be a part of the FHS family and looking forward to a great year ! I am thankful to be here and I can’t wait to see all the amazing things my students will do this year!"

Spanish Classes interact with Guest Speaker
According to Ms. Martinez, spanish teacher at FHS, "My long-term goal is for our students to be able to participate in a global project with them. I am also currently working on some more ideas for our Spanish students to participate in a Spanish Club, a Spanish National Honor Society and a "La Charla" table event where the students could talk to the native speakers during the event on a weekly basis to practice their oral communication and work with a native partner. "
Additionally, this month is Hispanic Heritage month from today, September 16th through October 15th, so classes will be focusing on different Hispanic artists, musicians, and famous people throughout the month to showcase.

Suicide Prevention Month
This year's Suicide Prevention Month comes at a time when many individuals and families are struggling to find support.
To decrease feelings of isolation and increase overall wellness, all members of your family should have social supports. This can be accomplished even while practicing COVID-19 precautions.
Read about 7 practical strategies for bolstering your support system and consider using this opportunity to start a conversation about suicide prevention with your family.

Know the Warning Signs
For most parents it comes as no surprise that the pandemic has taken a serious toll on the emotional wellbeing of teenagers and young adults. Grief and loss, prolonged isolation and inactivity can all trigger depression and other mental health challenges. But a new report sheds light on an especially troubling trend: Over a quarter of young adults surveyed in June said that they’d seriously considered suicide in the past month.
None of us wants to believe that a child of ours is at risk. But right now, staying alert to warning signs and talking openly with kids about how they’re feeling is more important than ever. To mark the start of National Suicide Prevention Month, we’re providing resources to help families keep children safe. We look at risk factors and signs of trouble, as well as ways to support kids and encourage them to get help.
