Math
This week in math we will be finishing our unit on adding and subtracting fractions. The student will use the strategies they are learned about fractions to complete an assessment on Friday. The test will be over Topic 11, Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators. After the test Friday, the students will do STAAR Wars review and stations.
Science
In science we will complete our study over the changes of Earth’s surface. The students will complete assignments on weathering, erosion, and deposition and have to identify examples of each. The students will be given a study guide and play a jeopardy review game to help prepare for their test on Thursday.
Reading
We are beginning our reading for research unit. During this time, students are collaborating with other students and sharing their conclusions through presentation and publication. In order to be information literate, students must develop the fundamental skills and knowledge of inquiry and research. When preparing for a study of inquiry and research, students need to understand about:
- Selecting topics of interest that are significant.
- Summarizing and synthesizing information
- Demonstrating understanding of information
- Crediting sources
- Presenting information in categories
- Focusing on the topic and including several aspects
- Including facts, statistics, and examples
Writing
This Wednesday we will take a practice STAAR writing test. The students will be responsible for completing an expository composition as well as answering revising and editing multiple choice questions.
We will be using our research for writing! When writing a research report, students need to understand about:
- Selecting topics of interest that are significant.
- Crediting sources.
- Writing effective lead paragraphs and conclusions.
- Presenting information in categories.
- Focusing on the topic and including several aspects
- Including facts, statistics, and examples

Football at recess
Due to the growing number of incidents & injuries occurring on the playground related to football, students are no longer allowed to play football or catch during recess. Please note that this includes all grade levels. Students may not bring footballs to school. There will be no catch, no-tag football, etc.
TRANSPORTATION/DISMISSAL CHANGES
Dear Parents and Guardians,
At Austin Parkway Elementary we strive to provide the best experience possible for our students and their families. We are constantly looking for ways to streamline processes within our building. One of the processes that we are currently working on is that of early dismissal. The policy regarding early dismissal and checkout can be found in the Austin Parkway Elementary Student-Parent Handbook, on our website. Please see below for the excerpt.
In the case of an unforeseen event that causes a change in the way your child goes home please follow these steps.
- Send an email to Ms. Miller before 2:15 p.m., iris.miller@fortbendisd.com
- State in the email:
- Student’s name
- Teacher’s name
- Your name and relationship to student
- Your phone number for verification purposes
- Time of pickup (no dismissals after 2:45 p.m.)
- Reason for last minute change
