Kindergarten News ACES
Week Of October 24th
Highlights From Last Week....
In Reader's Workshop, we have been working on retelling the story by looking at the picture and asking "who" is in the picture and "what" is going on in the picture.
We have also been reading for 7 minutes. We did continue to practice our other strategies as well: building stamina, trading out books, practicing turning and talking.
In Writer's Workshop, we worked on labeling our drawings so that other people can read our stories.
In Math, we work on decomposing numbers with totals up to 9. We wrote numerals 1-9 in order. We learned how to write the numbers and used the numeral to represent a quantity.
In Phonics, we practiced letter sounds and learned the sight words "my" and "have", please practice these words at home. Our letters of the week were "a" and "g".
In Science we learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin and read many books relating to pumpkins.
In Second Step, continued to learn about our own feelings.
A peek at our learning this week...
In Reader's Workshop, we are going to learn to look at the picture AND the first letter of the word to see if it makes sense! We will introduce the students to "Lips the Fish" to get our lips ready for the sound the first letter makes. Many of our friends do not know their letters or the sounds they make. We are going to be sending home flashcards for you to work with your child each night. Please flash the card for the letter and the sounds they make. For example, B says /b/. This will help your child advance in their reading as we are looking at the picture and the FIRST letter. If they know the letter and sound, they will master this skill. Thank you in advance for your help! In order for your children to reach optimal success at school, we need to work as a team! Thank you!
In Writer's Workshop, we are going to learn to write our stories across pages.
In Math, we will work on decomposing numbers with totals up to 10. We will write numerals 1-10 in order. We will learn how to write the numbers and use the numeral to represent a quantity. We will also solve word problems by acting them out.
In Phonics, we will be practicing letter sounds and reviewing the sight words we have learned so far. Please practice these words at home. Our letters of the week will be "s" and "d".
In Social Studies, we will finish our unit on Community.

If you have any Box Tops to send in please do so soon, they will be collected at the end of this week.
Thank you for the tissue and Clorox wipes donations last week, we really needed them.
Looking forward to another amazing week with your kiddos.
Notes from Mrs. Goldthwaite
I placed the book order on Friday. The books will come in soon. I will be sending home the new Scholastic book order for November. That due date is November 10th.
We are working on writing our own stories. These stories are true stories. It would be helpful if you had a picture of your son/ daughter doing something with family or something they like doing. If you have a picture of a pet that they could talk about that would be helpful. I will return the pictures to you.
Some people are asking about conferences. They are going to be in December. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me.
I am curious who reads this news letter. If you do, can you email me that you have seen it. Thank you

I submitted scholastic orders this weekend so books will come in next week. Just a reminder, if you are sending in a paper order, please include your child's name on the order form and write a check payable to Scholastic. November orders will be coming home this week.
Please remember to check red folders daily for notices. If you have questions for me, I look for notes in folders every morning or you can call or email. I check my email and messages most lunch breaks. If it is a change in dismissal, it is best to put the note in the red folder so I will get it in the morning (in case things are busy and I dont get a chance to check phone or email during the day.)
Thanks so much to all of you for your patience in getting a new school up and running and managing the kinks along the way. We seemed to have settled in and things are running smooth and steady now! Your children are amazing and I am thrilled to share my days with them all!

Red folders: Please check and return red folders daily. It is very important to make sure you receive the papers that are going home in this folder.
Mrs. Chadwick will be returning on Wednesday, October 26th. It has been such a privilege and pleasure to get to know your children and I hope they continue to grow throughout the remainder of the school year, as I am certain they will. They are in great hands!!
