Basics DeKalb County: A resource for future Prairie View students!
Basics DeKalb County
About Basics DeKalb County:
Basics DeKalb County is housed at the DeKalb County Regional Office of Education and is a community-based and county-wide initiative that relies on the support of charitable donations, agency and business partners, and family engagement. We offer FREE resources and supports to families, caregivers, and local organizations so that ALL children in DeKalb County will have a great start in life.
Basics DeKalb County is part of a comprehensive early learning initiative known as the DeKalb County Kindergarten Readiness Collaborative that was founded as part of a collective impact movement at the DeKalb County Community Foundation. We are inspired by the fact that 80% of brain growth occurs in the first three years of life. Everyday interactions between children, their parents, caregivers, and any adult in the community can provide rich opportunities to boost brain development in DeKalb County children. Every child from every background can benefit.
Basics DeKalb County is an affiliate of the Basics Learning Network, a nationally-recognized initiative that provides strategies for whole communities to support vibrant learning and brain development among infants and toddlers.
DeKalb County Basics is very excited to share with you an opportunity to learn more about a new early learning resource from ISBE & The Robert R. McCormick Foundation made to support families, educators and communities: a series of 14 joyful and engaging 2-minute videos that feature real families and give concrete examples of how caregivers can support their young children as they develop social-emotional, math and literacy skills. These videos highlight children ages 3-5 and align to our work with our local birth-age 3 initiative, Basics DeKalb County.
Each video is closely aligned to one measure of the Kindergarten Individual Development Survey (KIDS), an observation tool designed to help better understand the development and growth of kindergarteners in Illinois.
We hope that parents and caregivers can learn some simple tips and tricks for engaging their children around each of the KIDS measures.
Ways to use these videos:
- In pre-kindergarten settings as a way for parents to help their children be “Kindergarten ready”
- Kindergarten teachers, share these videos each summer with your incoming class to help parents understand what is developmentally appropriate in kindergarten
- Kindergarten teachers, use the videos as an opportunity to partner with your students’ parents. Observations they make about their children can be included as data collection for KIDS.

We can’t wait to hear how you use these videos! Feel free to share them far and wide. Please tag @Basicsdekalbcounty when appropriate in your communications. We have attached some suggested copy for newsletters, social media, etc.
