Academy of the Arts
March 6 - March 10, 2017
A Note from Your Principal
I know you are looking forward to this exciting week. First, our big Scholastic Book Fair begins on Monday and will close mid morning on Friday. On Thursday evening the Relay for Life Team will host a Hot Dog supper at 5:00 to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The supper will be followed by our annual Open House.
Here are a few details about the Open House on Thursday evening from 5:30-7:00. Students have prepared special items for you to see at our annual Open House. We are getting ready for everyone to share their learning space and their actual learning as well. Along with the general academic classrooms, our enrichment arts classrooms will be open for everyone to visit. This is true EXCEPT for our actual art classroom. Mrs. Dietz and her docents will be in the gym for the Art Show. Students will have framed art for purchase. You will not want to miss seeing your child's art on display. We hope you will take a few minutes to come by and show your support for your child(ren) and the Academy of the Arts at Bransom.
I want to remind everyone that next week is Spring Break. All teachers and students are looking forward to spending time with family. I hope that you are making plans for quality time together. Friday will have a regular dismissal time.
In closing I want to say thanks so much for every bit of support you are giving our campus during this first year of being an Academy of the Arts at Bransom. We have enjoyed seeing the new student learning and student successes in the arts classes as well. We have begun to look to the future for additional offerings and adjustments to enhance our overall opportunities for learning.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Burchfield
BISD Schools of Choice Application is Open
As many of you know beginning last year, BISD open enrollment at three elementary campuses. It is that time of year when the application process is open again for next year. All kindergarten through 4th graders have the opportunity to apply for one of four campuses. Our hope is that Academy of the Arts students have the desire to stay here but in the event that families want to apply for another campus, it is time to apply. 5th graders are welcome to apply for a middle school and one middle school program.

A Note From Your Assistant Principal
Run through a few scenarios with me...
- It's Monday morning, your alarm doesn't go off because you forgot to set it the night before. You wake up 20 minutes late. The kids need to be at school but you figure that if you are going to be late, you might as well grab some donuts on the way. What is an extra 5 minutes late to class? No big deal, right?!?
- You notice that your sweet girl is dragging a little bit before bed. She's not complaining of anything specific but just isn't herself. No fever, no headache, no sore throat...just blah. The next morning is the same story, so you decide to keep her home from school "just in case".
Five minutes makes a difference. Kids do not like to walk into class late, where all eyes are on them wondering where they have been. In most cases, the class has started on morning routines and procedures and students that are tardy are missing those key parts of the day. Five minutes makes a difference!
We want students to be happy, healthy, and ready to learn at school. If they are sick, it is best that they are at home with you. If they are not feeling 100%, but have no fever or other symptoms, it might be best for you to send them to school to try to make it. The state sets aside days that students are able to be absent and do not have to make up. When you push it, and keep kids home when they are not truly sick, you are losing days that you would use on those days that they really do need to stay home. One missed day is significant. Students are potentially missing new information that lays the foundation for learning in the days following. Kids begin to feel the pressure when they miss multiple days and multiple lessons.
You are the expert on your kiddo! You know them better than anyone. Please use your gut, it's usually right. We just want you to be aware of the significance that tardies and absences play here at school and the effect that it has on your students. Attendance is important.
