We Want More Than Just OK
Last Day of School - June 19th - 11:55 AM Dismissal
Ever since I have been a kid, summer has always shown up at just the right time, and this year is no different (though I love Cold Spring and your kids, summer is still a good thing). I still remember many summer days playing croquet in my yard with my brother and sister or swimming in a friend’s pool. Now I enjoy my summers with my own children, hoping to create memories for them.
With this in mind, I wanted to use this opportunity to encourage you to use this summer as an opportunity to allow your kids to experience childhood. Like many parents, I always need to remind myself that it is not my job to entertain my kids all summer long. Though I am often tempted to want to “schedule” my kids’ every minute, I have learned the hard way that this is not best for them. I have learned the hard way that it’s ok for my kids to be “bored” during the summer, for boredom (as long as it’s supervised) can lead to great times of discovery for kids. Through boredom kids discover that life is not always exciting. Through boredom kids learn to be creative. Through boredom kids learn that it is not their mom and dads’ job to entertain them during every waking hour.
For sure, as parents it is vital that we spend time with our kids, and that we plan to do this in one way or another. Vacations, a walk, a bike ride, or a catch in the backyard are all great opportunities for us to interact with our kids. However, I need to continually caution myself that I must allow my kids the opportunity to find their own fun, to create their own memories and to entertain themselves. A little boredom may be the first step in this direction.
I wish you a great last two weeks of school and a safe and fun-filled summer!
