9/11 Recap

Last week we completed our discussion on the events of September 11th and I am so proud of our students. They handled themselves very maturely and really stood up to the task of understanding such a dark event in our nation's history. I was so inspired by what students shared from their primary source interviews. A student in my 4th Period even suggested that we compile all the wisdom gathered into a book, and I wholeheartedly agreed! Thank you for sharing your experiences with your student and it is my sincere hope that they have a better grasp of the shock, grief, strength, and patriotism that took place during that time period.

We've already embarked on the journey that is Fantasy Island, in fact, the homework tonight is to pick out an island shape, trace it, outline it in Sharpie, and bring it to school tomorrow. Be sure to check my webpage for details and examples!

Interim Report Cards

The moment of truth has arrived! You should receive an Interim Report Card for your student within the next day or two. The important thing to know is this is a snapshot of your student's grades from the first three weeks of school. If the grade is satisfactory, great, keep up the good work! If it is not, then please discuss with your student how they could work to improve their grade before the official report card comes out in a few weeks. If you notice that your student is missing an assignment, please have them come see me so we can talk about it. If you have any questions for me, as always, please email or call me!
Bengal Team Homework

This is the document that we use in study hall to show kids all of their homework at a glance. I'm sharing it with you so you won't have to go to each teacher's webpage every day. Hope it helps! :)

Things I forgot to talk about on parent night:

Wish List

If you happen to be a hoarder of school supplies, I know I am, and happen to have any random supplies lying around your house, I would love you forever if you would donate them to our classroom! Here's a few supplies of which we could never have too many:

  • Pencils
  • Glue sticks
  • Index cards
  • Post-it notes (we use these for discussions and I go through approximately 1,000,000 per year! :)
  • White or colored cardstock
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Grade level appropriate books (fiction chapter books or history books would be awesome!)
  • Markers
  • Colored or regular Duct Tape
  • Scissors
  • Rulers

Google Classroom

Google Classroom is the MOST AWESOME THING TO HAPPEN TO TEACHING SINCE... I don't even know what... maybe chalk. It is so cool! Students had the option to turn in their 9/11 Student Reflections (last Friday's homework) on Classroom and it was so fun to comment on their work and be able to grade it right then and there. The feedback I've gotten from students is equally positive, they said it was really easy to use.

If you have a spare second, have your student log in and show you how it works. If they have trouble getting in or forgot their password, have them come see me and we'll get it sorted out. We'll be doing one of our projects about Egypt on Classroom in mid-October and I want to make sure everyone is comfortable logging in and using classroom before then.

As always, thanks for your support and I look forward to an exciting rest of the year!
