Year 5 Newsletter
Term 1 - Wednesday 30th September 2015
Welcome to the Year 5 Newsletter
We hope you had a fantastic long weekend for the Mid Autumn Festival!
It has been a busy few weeks as always in Year 5 and it is hard to believe we are nearly at the end of our first themed unit!
A reminder of the public holiday tomorrow (Thursday) and no school for the students on Friday due to the ESF-wide professional development day.
Also a reminder that the newsletter will be published every 2 weeks on a Friday (except this time due to the CPD Day). A link will be emailed to parents using the gateway details so please keep your email etc up-to-date.
Unit of Inquiry
'Who We Are'.
Central Idea: Understanding how we learn helps us to take more responsibility.
Lines of Inquiry: An inquiry into...
different ways of learning (responsibility, trust)
how behaviours affect thinking and learning (function, self-regulation)
- our responsibilities as learners (reflection, perseverance)
The students have been gaining a better understanding of their own learning styles and how best to cater for them. The focus for the past few weeks has been on investigating strategies to suit their learning styles and carrying out research about 'The Brain'. Activities involved testing our learning strategies by learning how to count from 1 - 10 in Swahili, to making brain hats to show how our brains work.
The unit is coming to a close but we hope the students will use their strategies throughout the year to enhance their own learning.
The theme for the next unit is 'How the World Works'. There will be more information about this unit in the next newsletter.
