Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly
On Friday, January 12 we will have our MLK Assembly starting at 1:10.
We encourage parents/families to come and watch. To help streamline visitors in a more efficient way and still maintain safety, we are trying something different.
Parents/families will be signed in by office staff outside the bus line up gate and enter the gym through the gate. This will minimize the fun chaos and overcrowding in the actual office. The gate will be closed once the assembly starts (any visitor coming to the assembly after gate is closed will need to go to the office directly to sign in).
After the assembly, we will ask parents/families to exit out the back gym door. If parents/families are wanting to take their student home after the assembly, they will need to go out the gym back door and then go to the office to sign out their student and the office will call classroom for student. Keeping with safety guidelines, Parents and families may not take their student directly from the gym.
Thank you in advance for highlight this assembly in your regular classroom communication to families (if possible).
PBIS Update
January's Character Trait is KINDNESS! To help with the Character theme of "Kindness" the PBIS team has a couple of things to help further the discussion.
- Each day of January you will receive a a slide for that day on ways that we can show kindness. The topic of this slide will be mentioned in the announcements that morning but if you would like to continue the conversation during your SEL time or any other time of the day the slide gives some conversation starters. You don't have to use it if you don't want, but we thought it would help continue the conversation throughout the month. Please refer to Patty's email sent previously for more info and the slides for next week. The topics for next week are:
- Monday- Smile at 25 people
- Tuesday- Tell a joke and make someone laugh
- Wednesday- Make and display a "Kindness Matters" Sign or drawing
- Thursday- Sincerely Compliment 5 people
- Friday- Invite a new friend to play and hang out with you

i-Ready Winter Diagnostic
The testing window for the winter diagnostic for i-Ready reading and math is January 2-February 2. I encourage teachers not to give it during the first week back from break so students can adjust to being back and back to a school routine.
The winter diagnostic must be manually assigned. Follow these steps: https://i-readycentral.com/faq/how-do-i-assign-or-cancel-a-diagnostic/
The following may be helpful as you prepare your students for the diagnostic:
o Preparing for a Subsequent Diagnostic presentation
o understand the i-Ready growth model and how it can be used to help students set ambitious goals.
Remaining Apex Funds
Similar to last school year, SDLT approved the use of an Apex Grant application process for some of the remaining Apex funds. After allocating this year's APEX funds to standard expenses (classrooms - $400, field trips - $1000/grade level, subscriptions, etc.) we have around $10,000 total but are wanting to keep $2,000 in reserve to continue to supply CS T-Shirts for staff/students. This leaves about $8,000 that is available to allocate for other class/grade level or school wide projects, events, supplies etc.
Why does this amount seem much less than last year?
Due to the pandemic, last year we ended up having 2 years' worth of fundraising funds that had built up because we could not really spend it on event gatherings and field trips.
How can my class/grade level get their hands on some Moolah 🙂?
If you or your grade level as an idea for a class project, event, school wide assembly, etc., please complete an Apex grant form: Apex Grant Request Due Feb 2 Please complete one form per request. (For example, if your team is requesting money for books and money for STEM, create a different submission for each request.) Provide enough information in the description field so the SDLT can make decisions about the requests. You should include information about who will benefit, the goal or need for the material, activity, or project, and budget details, if appropriate. (Before requesting additional Apex funds, you do need to use your classroom grant funds first and field trip money if submitting a grade level grant request)
Please submit requests by 4pm on the Friday before the above leadership meeting dates (Feb 6, March 19, April 23, May 7). Please reach out with any questions or connect with your SDLT Rep.
Self-Care
Simple Self-Care Idea: Make sleep part of your self-care routine.
Sleep can have a huge effect on how you feel both emotionally and physically. Not getting enough can even cause major health issues. Start by thinking about your nightly routine. Are you eating or drinking immediately before bed? If so, it's especially important to stay away from caffeine and sugar, which tend to keep you awake.
Next, make sure your bedroom is the best possible place for you to get good REM sleep. It should be free of distractions (such as a television, laptop, cellphone, etc.). And make sure you have room-darkening curtains to keep the sun from waking you up too early in the mornings.
