Admissions Beat
For Families Considering Burke | June 2020
Dear Prospective Families,
If you are interested in Burke for Fall 2020 enrollment, please let us know, so that we can discuss whether space might open in your specific grade.
For the 2021-22 school year, we welcome applications for 6th-11th Grade. Our "expansion years" are 6th and 9th Grade, but we do increase grade size in 7th and 10th as well.
For all prospective families, our Admissions process has been 100% online since March. Until we can safely host you at the Burke campus (hopefully in the near future), we look forward to meeting you virtually. Select a "Chat with Admissions" event below to register:
We look forward to connecting!
Best,
Admissions @ Burke
- Science 6 built miniature "lego landscapes" together on Google Meet, then drew their own topographic maps and shared the results
- 7th Grade Life Science completed scavenger hunts in their neighborhoods and homes (while observing social distancing) to find abiotic and biotic factors
- 11th & 12th Grade Figure Drawing gathered on Google Meet to sketch from a live model and then shared their work on camera
- Intermediate Instrumental Music studied the chord progression and the scale modes in "Pachelbel's Canon," and then composed and recorded their own arrangements
- Spanish 4 practiced the subjunctive by giving advice: filming videos about building community remotely and staying positive during these tough days
A greatly anticipated tradition, Senior Week at Burke begins with senior project presentations and concludes with a spirited "send-off" for our 12th graders on the Friday before Graduation weekend.
For the Class of 2020, that tradition lived on – even from a distance. Their Senior Week kicked off with a "senior brunch," thanks to an online cooking ("cook along") class with City Cooking West End. Additional morning events included final advisory meetings and an Academic Awards ceremony, streamed on YouTube.
On Tuesday through Thursday morning, students chose among online discussions with guest presenters, representing NBC News, Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, Save the Children Action Network, and Washington Parks & People, among others. Afternoon featured casual activity blocks, ranging from Fun Food Science to Hip Hop History to Speed Drawing.
And on Friday, seniors and faculty gathered on Google Meet to share memories, anecdotes, and thank-yous from their years at Burke.
