Remote Learning Grading Policy
Receiving feedback about our learning is essential to improving our understanding of given concepts. We need to understand where our strengths are and where we might have misunderstandings. We also need to receive feedback to help us develop the skills and knowledge needed to master a given standard or concept.
Since our schools have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemics, schools and students have been required to shift how we teach and how we learn. For some this shift to the new remote learning format has been an easy and smooth transition. However, for others this shift has presented many challenges.
In an effort to provide students and their families time to become more familiar with our new reality; our teachers were not grading the students’ performance in their classes in the beginning of this transition. However, we feel it is important to begin to provide feedback to our students and parents about the academic progress students are making in each of their classes.
As you are aware, all schools in the Monroe School District have moved to two remote learning options to serve our students. Our two remote learning options include an online learning option, and a paper-pencil learning option. Due to the instructional differences in these two learning options, the middle schools in Monroe will be assessing our students’ learning in non-credit earning classes using the following grading system.
- Above Standard (AB) - Indicates the student has demonstrated a strong understanding of the standards that have been taught.
- At Standard (AT) - Indicates the student has demonstrated an understanding of the standards that have been taught.
- Below Standard (BE) - Indicates the student has demonstrated an understanding that is approaching the standard, but they don’t have a complete understanding of the standards and concepts submitted so that the student may receive an “At Standard” or “Above Standard” grade.
- * Asterisk - Indicates the student hasn’t provided the evidence needed to the teacher to assess the student’s understanding of the standard. Students who received an *Asterisk will be given a plan that will indicate the standards and associated work that will need to be submitted so that the student may receive an "at standard" or "above standard" grade.
For any high school course that is taught at the middle school (Algebra, Geometry, Spanish) the students’ performance will be graded using the grading system that is being used at Monroe High School.
If you have any questions about the grading system we will be using in our middle schools for the remainder of the school year, please feel free to call, or email one of your middle school administrators and they will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Library book return
upcoming hiv instruction
Dear Park Place Middle School families,
This letter is to remind you that we make health education a priority in our district. Students in grades 5 through 12 will learn information, as required by law, about the risks of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV and AIDS. This instruction will be made available on your teacher’s classroom page during the week of June 8th for participating students.
This year, to minimize the educational burden on families, we are utilizing short videos approved by the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in place of our comprehensive human growth and development curriculum. Please consider that in the absence of this curriculum, the medically and scientifically accurate information presented in these videos, although age-appropriate, may introduce terms or concepts your student may not have had the opportunity to learn about yet.
We encourage you to review the video appropriate to your student’s grade level, as you have the right to opt your child out of participating. Please select a website link below to review the content for your grade:
- 5th grade: Marissa’s Story | Discussion Guide
- 6th -8th grade: Understanding HIV/AIDS
- 9th-12th grade: HIV - How to Protect Yourself and Others, STD Prevention - Beyond Condoms, Living with HIV, Understanding Sexual Consent and the Law
By law, parents must attest to reviewing this content before they can excuse their child from HIV prevention education. If, after reviewing the content, you intend to excuse your child from viewing the HIV prevention education videos, please fill out the opt-out form and return it to your child’s teacher via email no later than May 29, 2020.
Even if you choose not to have your child participate in this learning program, recognize that students tend to talk about this content with one another, and your child will likely receive second-hand information from their peers. Previewing the curriculum in advance will help you respond to any questions your child may have.
Due to social distancing requirements, this online review of content takes the place of our annual parent preview night. If you opted your student out of the HIV Prevention Education curriculum in the Fall, you will still need to review and opt-out of this content because it is different from the full curriculum material you previously reviewed.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Terry Cheshire, Principal
Kristie Hilson, Assistant Principal
Joel Garrison, Assistant Principal
