The Devils Arithmetic

Going Back In Time

The setting takes place in Hannah's grandmother's house while celebrating a jewish holiday called the Passover Seder.

Hannah Stern, a teen, who is bored of her relatives stories about there past isn't excited to celebrate a Passover Seder ( which is a Jewish holiday ). She is tired of her religion and thinks it is a waste of her time celebrating a holiday she cares nothing about. Hannah opens the door for the prophet Elijah during the celebration and is transported back in time to 1942 in the camp Auschwitz located in Poland during World War ll. In the time of the holocaust.

Hannah struggles to survive in the camps with all the diseases and work. She is having a hard time adjusting to these conditions and understanding what these people went through. She also has a hard time figuring out how to gain back her consciousness. Hannah is having an internal conflict because now she realizes the true meaning of the holidays they celebrate and her religion. The people around her are also being affected. Which makes them have an external conflict.
