EdTech@NSCDS News
- This Monday, I will not be hosting an afterschool drop-in session. Attendance has been low and I'm re-thinking about how to do similar sessions during the school day.
- NSCDS faculty should email me (Lucy) with requests for apps to be installed on their school or student iPads. I will then approve the request or ask for more information and the IT department will install.
- For subscription services, generally speaking, you should go through your department for these purchases. For example, if you need (and will use) a particular subscription-based tool or app such as Quizlet, purchase it and seek reimbursement from your department. Over the course of this year, I am planning on developing a process for requesting subscriptions prior to the next school year so that we can obtain bulk pricing or negotiate pricing based on users with specific companies.
- I'm available to meet with you, your grade level and/or department to explore how to integrate technology into classroom instruction. Book an appointment on my calendar here or send me an email!
- If you are teaching in the middle and upper schools, please make sure you are reinforcing NSCDS iPad policies and requiring students to bring their charged iPads to school every day.

PRODUCTIVITY - Speech-to-Text
Options for the Mac and iPad
- There is a good overview of text to speech on Understood.org, one of my favorite sites for parents.
- Voice Typing in Google Docs and Slides works very well. Here's documentation on how to use it.
- You could also set up Voice Dictation on your Mac and use it in Pages and in Keynote.
- Voice Dictation also works on the iPad.
- Here's an excellent list of other apps that make text more accessible in general although the site is geared toward the visually impaired.
- Below is a very short demo of how to use dictation in the Book Creator app.
GLOBAL COLLABORATION
3rd Grade Class in Mexico City
Dear Teacher,
I am a 3rd grade teacher in Mexico City. You might be interested in connecting with our students that will be presenting their projects about "The Day of the Dead" (Día de Los Muertos). They are very excited to present their information and projects. I have one Social Studies, 3rd grade class (10 year old students). Student presentations are short (about 5 minutes each) and we can accommodate a connection of 20 minutes. We are interested in connecting with a class that would like to learn about the holiday, and can provide some feedback, comments and questions to engage our students, and that can act as an audience. Our students may also like to ask some questions about your students, school and country.
If you would like to connect and can do it at the time s provided here, register asap and please let us know so we can follow up with specific details about the connection. Social Studies Project
We look forward to hearing from you! If you know any other global educator who might be interested, do not hesitate to share this information with him/her.
Gracias
