Literacy Spotlight
Daily Reading Routines
Everyday reading is key to student’s success. Experts recommend 20 minutes of reading per day. Reading stimulates and exercises many parts of the brain. Reading increases listening skills, builds literacy skills (letter/sound relationship, etc) and vocabulary, improves academic performance, and deepens your bond with your child. Reading also improves memory, focus, and concentration. How can you ensure you are getting the most out of your nightly reading time? Try the tips below to make your nightly reading more effective.
Read the title and ask your child to predict what the story may be about.
Take a story walk. Flip through the pictures and talk about what you notice and what may be happening in that part of the story.
Model fluent (smooth) reading. Have fun with the story! Change your pitch and intonation to build excitement and enjoyment.
Talk about the story. Ask your child questions, have them tell you their favorite part, and allow them to share their thinking.
Write about reading. Have your child write or draw about the story. They can illustrate their favorite part, write a summary, or give a response to the story (how it made them feel, what it made them think about, etc).
Read your favorite stories again and again and allow your child to read along with you.
Point to the words if it is a short text.
Second Step
I AM SO MAD!!!!!!!
Counselor’s Corner
Everyone gets angry, but what do we do when we feel angry? Using the Second Step program, one option is to do belly breathing. It’s always important to practice these steps when a child is NOT angry. When the child is upset, breathe along with the child to use the calm down strategies effectively! Practice each day so that your child can use this technique at home or at school.
Have students put their hands on their stomach, just above the belly button.
Next have them focus attention on their breathing as they take a slow, controlled breath through the nose, deep into the lower part of the lungs. They should feel their stomachs moving out as they do this.
Then have them breathe out slowly through the mouth. They should feel their stomachs moving in as they breathe out.

Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are a problem throughout our community and can be found across the Midlands and across the globe. Though a few cases have been reported in our area recently, no widespread cases have occurred in our schools.
This information is being sent home as a proactive measure to give our families the tools they need to thwart the spread and threat of bed bug infestation. Below is information on bed bugs from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small, flat, parasitic insects that feed solely on the blood of people and animals while they sleep. Bed bugs are reddish-brown in color, wingless, range from 1mm to 7mm (roughly the size of Lincoln’s head on a penny), and can live several months without a blood meal.
Where are bed bugs found?
Bed bug infestations usually occur around or near the areas where people sleep. These areas include apartments, shelters, rooming houses, hotels, cruise ships, buses, trains, and dorm rooms. They hide during the day in places such as seams of mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, dresser tables, inside cracks or crevices, behind wallpaper, or any other clutter or objects around a bed. Bed bugs have been shown to be able to travel over 100 feet in a night but tend to live within 8 feet of where people sleep.
Do bed bugs spread disease?
Bed bugs are not known to spread disease. Bed bugs can be an annoyance because their presence may cause itching and loss of sleep. Sometimes the itching can lead to excessivescratching that can sometimes increase the chance of a secondary skin infection.
School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties takes very seriously all reports of bed bugs. Any reports are immediately investigated and addressed. We greatly appreciate your efforts in helping us protect other families and our staff from having to deal with this issue.

NOTE FROM THE MEDIA CENTER
Overdue books keep a student from being able to check out a new book when he or she comes
to the Media Center. We send overdue notices home with interims and again with report cards each nine weeks.
We are happy to work with anyone who may not be able to pay for a lost or damaged book IF you
contact us and let us know. Also, little ones may need help looking for a misplaced book. When you see an overdue notice, please talk with your student so we can get their book issue resolved. Thank you for helping us help your child grow their love of reading!
