Congratulations to our PEEPS Winners!
- Noelle in Kindergarten - By listening with my ears.
- Ava in 3rd grade - I can show respect to members in my classroom by paying attention in class and by not goofing around.
- Olivia in 4th grade - Don't talk over someone when they are talking. Be respectful of others. Treat others the way they want to be treated.
This week's PEEP - Look for the PEEPs board somewhere on campus and respond to the question about CARING: What was a time someone CARED for you?
Answers are due by February 28.
Jog-a-thon - THANK YOU and ... We Did It!
THANK YOU to everyone for another successful Jog-a-thon! The students impressed us all with their perseverance and can-do attitude out on the track. It was so encouraging to see the parents, siblings and grandparents out there cheering their runners on. Thank you to our teachers, staff, Mr. Mosgrove, and our custodian, Mr. Armin, for assisting us with this event -- we could not do it without them. Thank you to our Friends of the Foundation and especially to Laces Running Company, CPK, Mira Mesa Auto Techs, Pacific Polo, Smart Solar, Eye Level, i-Ortho, and Jen Howard for supporting this year’s Jog-a-thon. A special shout-out goes to Victor Rubio for putting together the music playlist and DJ'ing the event.
We have completed preliminary calculations of our Jog-a-thon donations, and we have some exciting news! Our SCHOOL-WIDE GOAL of raising $20,000 was MET. Not only was it met, your donations SURPASSED the goal by over $11,546, bringing the preliminary grand total to $31,546. We still have some corporate matching coming in. Once we get the final numbers, we will provide the final grand total. CONGRATULATIONS!

Second Outdoor Classroom Build Party Outcome
Though the turnout wasn't as large as we had hoped, we were still able to accomplish a few things on Sunday, February 10. Pavers were laid inside the school's front gate. A topcoat of paint was applied to the handball wall poles. A ramp was also built for Coach Mills' PE shed! Finally, we removed the remaining canvas canopy near the back playground.
We received positive feedback on the planters that were built at our first build party. Principal Mosgrove informed us that staffs from other schools were impressed by our work. Great job DADS volunteers!
There will be a meeting on March 1 at 7:00 pm to discuss upcoming events. Please email me at vicjchan@juno.com, if you are able to host the meeting.

Counselor's Corner
Want happier kids? Help them practice kindness. When kids do acts of kindness, they perceive gratitude in those they helped. “When you commit acts of kindness, you may begin to view yourself as an altruistic and compassionate person” - Result of studies by Sonja Lyubomirsky – Univ. of California – Riverside psychologist. Considering the huge problem in our society of mental health issues, especially depression and anxiety, this is significant.
“Practicing kindness increases children’s prosocial behaviors as well as their happiness, self-esteem, gratitude, popularity, health and resilience. But perhaps most important: when our kids practice kindness, they discover the joys of giving, feel the gratitude from others, see themselves as more compassionate and step briefly into the shoes of another.” Borba
Kindness is one of the easiest habits to cultivate in kids, and the best way to do so is not with fancy, purchased materials, textbooks, and worksheets, or time-consuming programs. Modeling, expecting, guiding, explaining, and reinforcing are much more effective way to cultivate this habit. As parents you model this behavior.
Practicing kindness – five things to know:
- Kindness is contagious, needs just a spark to ignite, and spreads quickly.
- The more kids see, hear, and practice kindness, the more likely they’ll adopt it as a habit.
- Kindness can be strengthened like a muscle, but regular workouts are crucial for it to become habitual.
- Acts of kindness must be meaningful and varied to reap gains.
- Kids learn kindness by comforting, helping, caring, sharing, and cooperating, not through hearing lectures or doing worksheets.
Kindness is strengthened by practice but doesn’t have to cost a dime, take much time, or require any particular talent. Ideas include: holding the door open for someone, helping a classmate with homework, asking someone who is lonely to sit with you, asking a lonely friend to play, volunteering at a nursing home, spending time with an elderly person, or reading to a younger sibling, etc.
Enjoy your parenting adventure.
