First Grade
4th Marking Period Newsletter
Fabulous in First
Our first grade students have been working so hard and have grown so much this school year. As we embrace this final marking period, we will continue to learn new concepts as well as focus on strengthening the skills that have been taught throughout the year in preparation for 2nd grade. Students will be expected to work more independently and take more responsibility for their learning.
With warm weather and spring sports we want to stress the importance of continuing to do math and spelling homework as well as read with your child each night.
Math: The concerts of money and time will be introduced. Students will be focusing on the penny, nickel, dime and quarter and telling time to the hour and half hour.on both analog and digital clocks. We will also explore 2-D and 3-D shapes and define them by their attributes. We will solve comparison story problems. We will balance equations and find unknowns in equations. We will apply geometry to partition shapes into equal squares and use models to compare fractions.
Language Arts: We will continue with spelling words and patterns. We will focus on reading fluently to support comprehension. We will retell and answer questions, describe characters, the setting and major events in stories. We will identify who is telling the story at various points in a text. We will describe relationships with text and discuss the central message in stories. We will continue to practice writing in complete sentences using subject verb agreement, capital letters and appropriate punctuation.
Social Studies: Unit 3 will build the foundation for your child as they learn about money, including basic economic princi-ples such as goods, services, and making wise choices with their money. Unit 4 will help your child learn about the environment. We will discuss ways to keep our earth clean and healthy such as reducing, reusing, and recycling.
Let’s make this 4th and final marking period our best yet!!!
