October 2017
From the Principal
For this month's prayer I am sharing the Prayer of St. Louis de Montfort.
O Jesus living in Mary,
come and live in Your servants, in the spirit of Your holiness,
in the fullness of Your might, in the perfection of Your ways,
in the truth of Your virtues, in the communion of Your mysteries.
Subdue every hostile power, the devil, the world and the flesh,
in the strength of Your Spirit, for the glory of Your Father, Amen.
I pray that all of you have an Outstanding October.
Sincerely,
Glenn Plummer

Intercession Time Update from Mr. Foley
Our new Intercession period on Wednesdays and Thursdays has been a success through three weeks. The students and teachers are embracing the change and the challenges of a new program. The computer scheduling program we are using, Setmore, has been pretty effective, but there continues to be minor issues that we need to fix.
I want to thank the students for their help with this process. When I have asked them to do something different or correct a mistake, they have been following directions and suggestions.
The teachers are pleased with the first three weeks of intercession and are reporting mostly positive comments from students.

Sophomore and Juniors:
On Wednesday, October 14, our school will administer the Pre-SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®),
a test that showcases the skills and knowledge you are earning in class that are essential for college.
This test is available for all Sophomore and Junior Students. This qualifies Juniors for the National Merit Scholarship, while it is great practice for Sophomores to see what the test is like and to prepare for future tests, such as the ACT and SAT.
We encourage you to take advantage of the many benefits PSAT/NMSQT offers:
• Get connected to colleges and universities across the country — and to scholarship organizations— by opting into Student Search Service® on the test.

FAFSA
Seniors and their families should start filling out the FAFSA--the Free Application for Federal Student Aid--this fall. The application opens on October 1. Many colleges require you to complete this, even if you may think your family won't qualify for financial aid. Colleges recommend completing this early (before December), as financial aid comes on a first come, first serve basis.
The FAFSA helps students qualify for scholarships, grants, loans and work study programs in college. To get started, visit https://fafsa.ed.gov/
Families can also take advantage of the Iowa College Access Network (ICAN) representatives. They have an office in Coralville in the Kirkwood Regional Center (on Oakdale Blvd). Representatives can assist you in filing out the FAFSA and the services are FREE! Appointments are booking up fast! To set up an appointment with a representative, visit:http://www.icansucceed.org/ or contact: (877) 272-4692

Kirkwood Program Fair
We’d like to invite your staff, students and parents to attend the Kirkwood program fair on Friday, October 20th, from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Iowa City campus. Representatives of Kirkwood degree, diploma and certificate programs will be on the IC campus to answer questions and provide additional information.
We’re really excited to have area students visit the IC campus to learn more about Kirkwood. Program directors and faculty from at least 6 different departments representing over 80 different diploma and career programs will be there. Your students will be able to talk to the program directors and faculty directly about career opportunities they might not hear about otherwise.
Diploma and certificate programs usually take between nine months to one year to complete, and provide students the skills they need to start in an entry-level position in their chosen careers. Students completing two year programs often enter the workforce directly. However, for students planning to go to a 4 year post-secondary institution, many Kirkwood two-year programs provide an opportunity for students to transfer to obtain a 4-year degree.
Please share this link with students concerned about the demand and earning potential for people with 2 year degrees: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/decades-pushing-bachelors-degrees-u-s-needs-tradespeople/

Upcoming Orchestra Events
On Wednesday, October 4, the JH and HS orchestra students will have a special Q&A session with Diana Nollen, arts writer for the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Fitness and Wellness Class Visits Jazzercise
Makerspace in the Media Center
Each week during the Wednesday intercession period, the library is holding a Makerspace session where we focus on some “making” activity. We can use all sorts of items in our different activities. So far we’ve had a lego challenge and a marble raceway challenge. If you are cleaning out your craft area or toy boxes, keep the library in mind for those items you’re getting rid of. We can use legos, (or other construction elements) paper, thread, beads, fabric, yarn, felt, hot glue, straws, pipe cleaners, rubber bands, clay, paint, etc. Whatever we can’t use in the library we’ll recycle or share with teachers.
We can also use electronics like small drones, spheros, little bits. and model train parts for projects we do in class.
With so much emphasis on STEM content in the curriculum, our Makerspace supports independent exploration and support for classroom projects. We also think some students might find a future hobby or interest that they might never have explored before.
Regina Social Justice Club
For their September project, the Regina Social Justice Club made a meal to feed the two dozen or so guests at Catholic Worker House's weekly Saturday dinner. Elijah Fiegel, Kyla Salm, Rylee Newville, Steven Icardi, Carolina Icardi, and Andrew Thomsen devoted a Friday after school to whipping up delicious food in Ms. Sueppel's classroom. Our friends at the Catholic Worker House were very appreciative of their efforts!
Information & Articles
Iowa Core Science Standards
- Instructional practices will incorporate the Three-Dimensional Learning. The three dimensions (crosscutting concepts, science & engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas) work together to help students have a better understanding of science. More information on 3-D Learning can be found at https://goo.gl/oiJ1yh.
- Grades 6-8 will no longer follow the sequence of earth science-life science-physical science. All 3 areas are integrated within each grade. Due to this major change, implementation in grades 6-8 are allowed additional time.
- There is a requirement for all students in the areas of earth and space science. A new semester-long Earth and Space Science course will be mandatory for all students starting with the graduating class of 2022. Other options to meet this requirement are being investigated.
I have included the parent guides for grades 6-8 and 9-12 below.
