A Dash of Salt - How Understanding Intent Could Make Anyone a Better Parent
Positive intent is a conscious choice to teach instead of punishing. Teaching allows children to learn from their mistakes. First, we use the power of love to attribute positive motives to the child’s behavior. This keeps us in an integrated executive state. Then we can teach and help children shift to an executive state so that they can learn. Positive intent allows a child to make a mistake and recover. It helps everyone involved focus on finding solutions instead of placing blame and making judgments.

Note From the Counselor
Counselor Corner!
Welcome to February, families! Here we are again with another month and another lesson topic for classrooms. We will be visiting students to talk about Kindness and Empathy. Brighton Area Schools recognizes Kindness Week during the month of February, and we will connect with students to practice by looking at multiple perspectives in order to gain a better understanding of how our actions impact others and the world around us. We will discuss how others feel and where they are coming from. This provides a way to learn what we can do to help our family, friends, and peers when they need us most. Spreading Kindness is always a favorite message of ours, and we hope you continue to spread this message at home with your words and actions.
Lets Connect: If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school.
More Resources: We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home!
