I BELIEVE You Matter!!
I Believe in Honoring the Absent
We believe in you matter, we believe in relationships, we believe in helping others be successful, we believe in living above the line, we believe in keeping our day and we believe in Seeing the Problem, Owning the Problem. This month, our focus combines these Top 20 facets with Honor the Absent.
When we speak well of someone who is not present, we establish trust with those who are present. If we dishonor the absent, we violate trust with those who are present. In Top 20 Teachers (38-44,) authors describe life as a lake. Our lake becomes polluted if we post a Dump Here sign, inviting others to feel comfortable dumping their negativity around us. If a colleague is unhappy with another colleague, challenge them to look for a solution to whatever problem caused them to dishonor the absent. (See the Problem, Own the Problem... ring a bell?!) Top 20s are problem solvers. Bottom 80s are problem namers, not problem solvers. Top 20s hold names sacred and follow the 2-Out-of-3-Rule:
1. We can say someone else's name.
2. We can say something negative about that person.
3. We can say it to someone else.
If we do all three of these, we are dishonoring the absent. If we do only two, we are not dishonoring the absent. By honoring the absent, we hold ourselves and our colleagues accountable and assist in our lake's clean-up process. We work together to be better.
If we want better, we must commit to being better. I believe in becoming better. Do you?
RICHMOND RECOGNITION
To the Richmond PTC, thank you for organizing Winter Wonderland Week here at Richmond Elementary! I am eagerly anticipating the Winter Carnival tonight! Thanks to all of you for gathering our community together, making a difference today to create a better tomorrow!
Reading is Our Super Power!
This week we continue to focus on our World's Best Workforce reading goals in combination with I Love to Read Month and the Reading Pillar: Vocabulary. Without understanding of vocabulary, students cannot understand others or clearly express their own ideas. Vocabulary allows students to use the words they hear orally to make sense of the words they see in print. Strengthening vocabulary bolsters ability to grasp ideas and think more logically while boosting the power of persuasion. And, as always, increased vocabulary leads to a greater appreciation of reading and willingness to read more frequently! Consider vocabulary games to increase student understanding of what they read. Here is a link to an interactive spoons game if any of you are interested in learning more. I've played the game with students using synonyms, antonyms, and other definitions. Enjoy! :)
