Art Contest Opportunity- 4th and 5th Grade Students
You may remember that earlier this year we held a contest for GCISD's 5th grade students to design the challenge coin for our Soaring Valor trip. (Our very own CES student, Lucy Dellosso, won the contest and her coin was designed for the Soaring Valor participants.) Due to the popularity of that experience (both within GCISD and in the military community at large), we have been given an even greater opportunity to design the challenge coin(s) for the major upcoming Air Power Foundation, Sky Ball. Please see the attached Smore which has details of the contest, grade level themes, and more.
We realize that time is at a premium during the last few weeks of school. The deadline of May 30th is firm and has to be honored in order for the judging and minting of the coins in time for the Sky Ball event in November. This is a huge honor for GCISD, and we hope you'll encourage your children to participate. Their original artwork can be created at home or in class. One winner will be chosen for each of the 6 character traits (links to curriculum resources on each trait can be found in the directions on the Smore), and ALL entries will be displayed and used as decor for the Sky Ball event. All entries must be submitted to campus principals on or before May 30th.
Message from Nurse Rudolph
** Medications at school: student medications will begin to be sent home after Memorial weekend. OTC and emergency medications will be sent home with students. If you do not want your student to carry these medications home with them, please be sure to come by the clinic and pick them up. If your student takes any daily medications in the clinic that are considered to be "controlled" substances, you will be responsible for picking these medications up from the clinic on or before June 1st. Any medications remaining in the clinic after June 1st will be properly disposed as they may not stay in the clinic over the summer.
With warmer weather, more bugs, and field day approaching very quickly, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Sunscreen: please apply sunscreen prior to school. You may send sunscreen with your student if you feel it is necessary for a reapplication during the day and the teacher, or myself, can help with applying it if your student requests assistance.
- Insect repellent: insect repellant MAY NOT be sent to school with your student. This can be applied prior to arrival to school. DEET containing repellant typically lasts 6-12 hours, so no reapplication should be needed through the day.
- Change of clothes: please send your student with an extra change of clothing, especially for field day. As we all know, this time of year is unpredictable and the clinic has limited clothing available.
If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me anytime.

A Letter About our Technology Updates
Dear Cowboy Parents,
The district is on a five-year device replacement plan, meaning that students in kindergarten through third-grade will be receiving a new iPad. Our students in fourth-grade will hold on to their current device as they will receive a chromebook when they enter fifth-grade in the fall. There are some campuses that will be receiving their devices prior to the end of the current school year; however, to ensure that our students begin the new school year with working devices, we will be exchanging devices when we return for the 2017-2018 school year. This way we will not be concerned that the new device may be damaged over the summer before it is able to be used for instructional purposes.
One of the things that parents and staff shared with the district through ThoughtExchange is the concern with screen time and the possible disruptions to the instructional environment. Over the last several months, our technology services department has been working on a new mobile device management system which helps ensure that instruction is not interrupted with device misuse. With this new system, students will not be able to transfer apps purchased from their current iPad to the new device. They will still have access to them on another device with their personal login; however, they will not have access to them on the new device. We hope this will reduce distractions in the classroom and help with parental concerns regarding screen time at home.
We are very excited to be able to provide your student with this new instructional device.
During the first few days of school, we will provide you with more information to ensure a smooth device swap. If you have any questions, please contact our campus technologist or your student’s teacher.

Proceeds for PIE will go toward improving CES' outdoor space. (If you've been out there, you know it needs a lot of work!) That includes cleaning up the current garden and the gazebo area to make it a safe place for our kiddos and to purchase and install several musical instruments and play space for our new musical garden. The plans for the updated space have been well received by the staff. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Susie Pedersen 310-291-0877 or Brandi Davidson 682-234-9329.
