Coronation of King Francis II

BE THERE OR ELSE...

What is a Coronation? Why are we having a Coronation?

A coronation is the ceremony where a monarch is crowned. Francis II is going to be enthroned as king. Francis I recently passed away due to his old age; therefore, his son, Francis II, will take his place.

What is the Order of the Ceremony?

When you attend the ceremony, you enter the Church in order based on the feudal system. First the Clergy, then the Nobles, then the Knights, then the Peasants, lastly and most important, the King. As the King enters, everyone needs to kneel down except for the Clergy who gets the sword ready to do the honors of tapping it on the King's shoulders. The Clergy leads the King in accepting the oath.

What is the Oath?

Here is part of the oath:

The Archbishop shall minister these questions; and The Queen, having a book in her hands, shall answer each question severally as follows:

Archbishop: Will you to your power cause Law and Justice, in Mercy, to be executed in all your judgements?

Queen: I will.

Then the Queen arising out of her Chair, supported as before, the Sword of State being carried before her, shall go to the Altar, and make her solemn Oath in the sight of all the people to observe the premisses: laying her right hand upon the Holy Gospel in the great Bible (which was before carried in the procession and is now brought from the Altar by the Arch-bishop, and tendered to her as she kneels upon the steps), and saying these words:

The things which I have here before promised, I will perform and keep. So help me God.

Then the Queen shall kiss the Book and sign the Oath.

What are Symbols?

The King is given a signet ring at the coronation, and this ring is engraved with the family's coat of arms. A coat of arms is a visual image to show who you are. This ring is used to show the King’s approval. At the coronation, the King is also given regalia. Regalia are the symbolic objects of royalty.

What Is Your Job?

You should bring homage to give to the King. Homage are objects which are given to the King. By giving homage you will be likely to start off with a good reputation. The Clergy leads the service, and the craftsmen produce the signet ring. If you don't attend the coronation or you are late, you will be penalized.

What Should You Wear?

Your clothes depend on the class you are in. The King wears a purple or scarlet robe with regalia. The Nobles should wear a cloak with rich colors and leather shoes. The Knights should wear armor. The Peasant men should wear tunics and stockings, and the Peasant women should wear long gowns with sleeveless tunics and a hair cover called wimples.
