October is Italian American Heritage Month
Italian American Heritage Month is celebrated every year to honor and recognize the centuries of achievements, successes, and valuable contributions of Italian immigrants and Italian Americans. It occurs in October to overlap with the federal holiday of Columbus Day, which is celebrated on the second Monday of each October. Italian American Heritage Month was first celebrated in 1989 by a special proclamation of both Congress and President George H. W. Bush.
Over 5 million Italians immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 2000. Currently, there are over 26 million Americans of Italian descent residing in the United States. This makes Italian Americans the fifth largest ethnic group in our nation. Each year Italians around the country take time to celebrate their heritage, history, and culture with festivals and parades.

REMINDER
Halloween is fast approaching and will soon be celebrated at Middlebrook School. This is a fun time for our students. There is a change this year for our students. On Halloween, Kindergarten, First and Second grade are invited to come to school dressed in costume, while Third, Fourth and Fifth can bring a costume that could be put on in their classroom over their clothes.
Please know that costumes are OPTIONAL. Costumes cannot be violent in nature. Face paint or scary masks such as the “Evil Jester”, “It”, “Grim Reaper”, “Chucky”, “Scream” or any other costumes that contain blood/scars will not be allowed to be worn. No accessories of any kind are allowed.
We will have a school-wide assembly for students and staff where our student council will be discussing the importance of following our PAWS - positive attitude, act responsibly and work with heart, followed by a surprise from our staff. Our Kindergarten and Grade 1 students will parade around the gym before heading back to their classrooms.
Thank you for helping us to keep our students safe.
In celebration of upcoming Veterans Day on November 11th, we will be creating a bulletin board with pictures and a brief description of the honored Veterans. If you would like to recognize a current service member or Veteran, you may send in a picture with the name, location and military branch of service, and the connection to your family. You can find an example with a template by clicking: Veterans Day Sample
If you prefer, you may email a picture, approximately 4 by 6 inches, with the information listed. Please submit by Monday, November 7th. Please email lbalzano@trumbullps.org if you have any questions.
As always, if you have any questions, concerns or some good news to share with us, please feel free to contact us at school, 203-452-4411.
Enjoy the beautiful weekend ahead.
Warm Regards,
Debbie Ponte, Principal
Michele Molloy, Assistant Principal

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. Dyslexia is a general term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols, but that do not affect general intelligence. (Oxford Dictionary)
Throughout this month, we will be sharing some ways to support individuals with dyslexia.

Fathers Club Information
The Middlebrook Fathers Club serves as a forum for fathers to become more involved with their children and their school. As a sub-committee of the PTA, the mission of the Fathers Club is to provide services to the Middlebrook School Community through projects and school events. In addition, the Fathers Club provides families with opportunities to take part in exciting, fun activities held throughout the school year.
As an all-volunteer group, the Fathers Club is very flexible and appreciates of all contributions of time and/or services parents can give. Getting involved is easy, fun and a great way to be connected with the children and their school.
