First Week of School
Dear CDS Community,
What a joy it was to see the smiles on our students' faces as they entered the building on Monday morning! Students were full of energy and seemed determined to have an incredible year of learning in 2019-20! Many thanks to our fantastic staff for their enthusiasm and effort. I can assure you that each of our teachers is fully committed to offering your children the very best education possible this year.
We began the first day of school with a Student Orientation in which we introduced the new CDS teachers, discussed changes from last year, and emphasized the importance of showing kindness, being inclusive, and owning our education. Later in the day students were introduced to some exciting co-curricular clubs for the Fall Season, and had time to prepare binders and learn how to keep their Chromebooks safe.
The highlight of the first day back was the Red Cup Challenge---an activity that required students to Collaborate, Communicate, and think Critically in order to complete 8 stacking challenges using only a rubber band and 4 pieces of string. On some of the challenges, students were not allowed to speak, so they had to communicate using only body language. Everyone had a great time and learned something about teamwork in the process.
On the second day of school, students attended classes per the regular bell schedule and learned more about the expectations of their new teachers. During recess, students reconnected with their friends and released energy on the soccer field.
Throughout the week, Student Council campaigning was in full swing, and we enjoyed some excellent speeches on Friday from this year's candidates. We look forward to elections next week, and a new Student Council leading their peers in 2019-20.
Please see details about the week ahead within this week's Newsletter. Welcome back everyone!
Best regards,
Benjamin Scoville
Director of Middle School

World Language Progression
As you may be aware, CDS Middle School has made some changes this year to our World Language level progression. We have added a 6th grade Bridge program that we believe addresses the challenge of having only three World Language levels in a middle school with four grades. If you would like to learn more about these changes, please join us for an overview from 5:40 - 5:55 on Monday, August 26th in the Small Theater prior to Back to School Night. If you’re not able to make it on Monday, please know that we will offer a Parent Information Session in September on these and other changes in the Middle School for 2019-20 school year. Thank you.

English class with Mr. Baker
Grade 7 English has started off the year with a boost thanks to some serious SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) time during LAB. While a few students visited the library to get a new book, and a few took advantage of the in class library, I was delighted to see that almost all students arrived with a book in hand. Of course, reading is fundamental to literacy development, but did you know that it improves connectivity in the brain and is also a great way to relieve stress? Keep up the reading, students! Oh, and parents, you too! What are you reading?

Korean Class with Mr. Kim
내가 가장 발전하고 싶은 것 - Mr. Kim
Making New School Year’s Resolution - Mr. Kim
The first activity with students in Korean class this school year is 'Making New School Year’s Resolution'. Starting a new school year, we had time to think about ‘what I want to improve most in this school year’, and to refresh our mind. We've chosen three things that we want to develop the most, and have written why. Also we shared our resolutions with friends and promised to do our best to keep this resolution for a year. At the end of the school year, we'll have a chance to take this out again and reflect on how much we've made an effort to keep our promises.
