Heartland Happenings - July 8, 2022

Notes From Ms. Johnson

Greetings Heartland Families!

I hope that all of you are having a fantastic Summer break! Welcome to the Heartland Happenings for all of our new incoming 6th grade parents and students. During the school year, I send out a weekly newsletter with all things Heartland every Sunday so that you are able to stay in the know when it comes to our Thunderhawk community! We are gearing up for another fantastic school year! Summer is slowly coming to an end and personally, I have gotten to enjoy some time off with family and have really loved coaching my daughter's YMCA basketball team! Once July rolls around, we really begin to focus on the start of the school year and what we can do to ensure a smooth start!

Please look over the newsletter for updates and information regarding tasks that need to be completed before school begins. Also, be sure to pre-order your Heartland gear through our Heartland Parent Organization so that you can pick up your spirit wear before school starts! If your 7th or 8th grade student is interest in Fall sports (football, volleyball, softball & cross country), be sure to reference the graphics below for information.

Before I go, I would like to introduce and welcome our new assistant principals Laura Brown, Paul McQueen & Edward Hudson to Heartland! We are very blessed to have such hardworking, motivated and experienced educators on our team! All three of them have a wealth of knowledge that will add tremendous value to our Heartland Administrative Team! On behalf of the faculty here at Heartland, we are looking forward to the return of students in August! Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks. Great things are in store for your Thunderhawks!

Veronica Johnson

Principal, Heartland Middle School

Heartland MS Welcomes Our New Grade Level Principals

Laura Brown - 6th Grade Asst. Principal

While I’ve had an opportunity to meet many Heartland families over the last four years, I wanted to take a moment to formally introduce myself as I step into this new role as assistant principal. I was born and raised in Edmond and graduated from North in 2008. Sooner born and sooner bred, it only seemed right for me to attend the University of Oklahoma. I graduated in 2012 with a major in Public Relations and a minor in Communications. While in college, I worked for four years at Gingerbread Nursery School and Kindergarten. It was there that I fell in love with teaching and education. I moved back to Edmond to be closer to family when my sister started having children and continued working in preliminary education for the next three years. In 2015 I started my secondary teaching career at Mayfield Middle School in the Putnam City School district. I taught 6th and 7th grade English for two years. My third year at Mayfield I served as the RTI coordinator as well as the New Member Educator. While I valued the time and experiences I gained from Mayfield, I was ready to work closer to home and for the district in which I am so proud to be an alumni. For the past four years I have taught 7th grade Literacy here at Heartland. The experience as a new member educator at Mayfield and the various leadership positions I’ve served at Heartland led me realize my passion for administration and thus I went back to school and graduated at the top of my class with a Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2021. This will be my 5th year at Heartland, and I can honestly say that there is no other place I’d rather be or fellow educators that I’d rather work with to serve our students and community. I’m looking forward to the 2022-2023 school year and am eagerly awaiting the return of the Thunderhawks in August.

Paul McQueen - 7th Grade Asst. Principal

Greetings Heartland community! I started teaching in 1999 in Broken Arrow. Moved to Ponca City in 2006 to be the AP of East MS. In 2015, I remarried and moved to OKC to be the Principal of Western Heights High School. After 3 years I returned to the classroom to teach Science at Cimarron MS. My wife taught K/Pre-K for 23 years at Greenvale Elementary. This year, she will be teaching 2nd grade at Hilldale Elementary. We have 2 boys from my first marriage. Riley is 15 and will be a Sophomore at Ponca City HS. He plays Football, Basketball, and is training in Powerlifting. Connor is 17 and will be a Senior. He is active in the Band and Orchestra playing the Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Cello, Bassoon, and Bass Guitar. Dur his Junior year, Connor was the Co-Drum Major. He is planning on studying Pre-med after graduation. When not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family, woodworking, home improvement, restoring antique tools, and tracing my family history.

Edward Hudson - 8th Grade Asst. Principal

Greetings and Salutations! I am so excited about serving the Heartland community and providing guidance and support as your 8th Grade Administrator. I am a product of Oklahoma City and attended Classen SAS. After graduating Valedictorian and becoming an Oklahoma Academic Scholar, I attended the University of Central Oklahoma and received my degree in Instrumental Music Education & Psychology. During my time at UCO, I served as a TA at Clegern Elementary under the tutelage of Bill Powell and Christy Holloway. Following my time at UCO, I served as the Director of Bands at Putnam City West HS where I also served as the Performing Arts department chair. During my tenure, I served on several committees including: Guiding Coalition, Leadership and Learning Team, and the Southern Regional Educational Board, and PLC Team lead. I received my advanced degree in Educational Leadership focusing on Curriculum, Administration, and Supervision from the University of Oklahoma and graduated at the top of my class. I have been married to my wonderful wife Michelle for the past 3 years, and have two beautiful girls, Eliza (18 months) & Carmen (11 years). I look forward to building a great relationship with each of you and continuing the trajectory of excellence that is the Edmond standard!
