TJH Update #1
August 5, 2020
A Message from Dr. Mitzner
In the fall of 1993, I traveled down I-10 West for an interview in Katy ISD. I interviewed with Tom Wilson ( Yes - Tom Wilson Elementary namesake!) and then was sent to a new elementary school in a development called Cinco Ranch. The exit on I-10 was called Peek Road and there were COWS!! That cow pasture is now known as CostCo.
During this pandemic era, I am reminded that the only constant we can count on is change.
I know every parent is full of emotion figuring out the best plan for their family during this time. I cannot tell you what is right for you. However, I can tell you Tays Junior High is here to help you and your child learn and grow.
Regardless of the choice you make for your family, we have an incredibly talented staff who are working to redesign instruction for your children. No matter what format you choose, we are planning relationship building, engaging lessons, and innovative processes. You see- every teacher on this campus has had to redesign their concept of teaching. We know students need to be learning from one another, collaborating, problem solving, etc... we are reconstructing teaching strategies to address student learning while maintaining health and safety guidelines. We are planning ways to build relationships virtually. We are up for the challenge but we will need your patience, support and understanding along the way.
Tays Junior High staff has always focused on relationships, innovation, and excellence. This year is no different.
For all our new families, know I am honored to serve our school community. Please know I am here to support you in this journey as we prepare for the 2020-21 school year.
I send this communication out every Wednesday afternoon to our school community. There is a button for you to contact me directly. In the words of Helen Keller, " Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." Thank you for your commitment to working together for a great 2020-21 school year.
KVA commitment forms are due at midnight tonight. See the Katy ISD website or the information included below.

Smart Restart Information from the Katy ISD website
The Katy ISD Fall Semester begins August 19!
What will school look like in the fall? What are my child’s options? How is my child going to be kept safe? We understand that Katy ISD families and staff have many questions regarding our Return to School for the fall semester. Through your feedback, as well as continued guidance from the State of Texas, the Texas Education Agency and local health authorities, we are prepared to safely reopen Katy ISD schools for the 2020-2021 academic year. Katy ISD families will have the option of selecting in-person instruction with COVID-19 safety protocols in place, or virtual instruction via our Katy Virtual Academy (KVA).
Intermittent School to Home Virtual Instruction: Aug. 19 - Sept 4
Intermittent School to Home Virtual Instruction will begin August 19 for students who are electing to participate in-person instruction when campuses reopen. When there is a need to temporarily delay the reopening of schools for in-person instruction, or close a class or facility due to COVID-19, teachers assigned to teach in-person classes transition to instructing virtual classes via Canvas. Temporary transitions to virtual learning (i.e. Intermittent Home to School) are not part of the Katy Virtual Academy (KVA) programming.
In preparation for the first day of instruction on August 19, students who elect the virtual instruction option through Katy Virtual Academy (KVA) must submit a KVA commitment form by August 5. Parents who wish to have their student(s) return for in-person instruction on September 8 do not need to complete a commitment form or notify their child’s campus. Even though all Katy ISD students will participate in virtual learning from August 19 to September 4, it’s important for families who wish to have their student(s) participate in KVA when campuses reopen, complete a KVA commitment form. This will ensure that students have the same teacher on September 8, regardless of whether KVA or in-person instruction is elected. While the goal is to resume plans to reopen campuses on September 8, please keep in mind that any plans are subject to change given the course of this pandemic and guidance issued by the state or counties.
