Sacred Heart School
Week of March 26
Children Are Citizens
It was normal for us - to see parents and students and teachers working together.
It was normal to see students with screwdrivers and saws. To see students building tables, digging in the dirt, and cleaning up the playground.
It was normal to see the students as an equally important part of our school community.
After we finished cleaning up the school, several of us headed downstairs for the March for Our Lives. Standing next to our team of teachers, listening to the speeches by the students of Parkland, FL, and the students from Chicago and South LA, I was reminded that for many... it's not normal to see students as citizens. In schools, communities, and in our current government, students are not seen as equally important members of our communities.
Now, more than ever, we must hold on to our core belief that Children are Citizens - not just when they turn 18, but now.
We must continue to honor the citizen in all of our students. We must continue to listen to them. We must continue to let them guide our instruction - by supporting them in learning about issues that matter. We must continue to empower them to use their values to take action.
Our mission is to empower students and families to build a more just and compassionate world. Sometimes, it seems like this is a lofty goal.. but this weekend proves that this is not a far off goal. This is happening now. Students across the country are working together to build a more just and compassionate world.
Let's make sure we're empowering our students - and not getting in the way!
