Welcome Back to School
I am very excited to be serving as the Interim Principal for WAVE. Adding this new role has reminded me how it can feel when we are learning new things. While at times it can be scary, frustrating, or overwhelming, a growth mindset can help us focus on the feelings of excitement and joy as we acquire new skills.
My hope for you is that this is a year of learning many new things! Embrace the challenge, reach out for help as you need it, and remember to connect with your peers and the staff. As I have been reminded in the last few weeks, we do best when we learn in community! The WAVE team is here and ready to support you.
Learning and growing with you,
Dr. Shannon Young
WAVE Interim Principal
Interim WAVE Principal
Getting to know Dr. Young
I am so excited to be joining the WAVE community!
I have a long history not only in the Wausau School District but in the charter school and individualized education areas as well. I have worked with families and students at EEA Learning Academy in the WSD for the past 18 school years, serving as principal for the last 10. Educationally speaking, I have my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, my Master’s degree in School Counseling, my Principal certification, and my Doctorate in Leadership for the Advancement of Learning and Service.
While I sincerely appreciate our brick-and-mortar settings and all they have to offer, I have found my passion in the non-traditional, individualized education settings. It is that passion for individualized settings that serve the unique needs of students that led me to offer to help if needed in the transition of Mrs. Seymour's leaving. So when called upon to serve as Interim Principal, I gladly said yes.
Outside of school, I am a wife, mom, and now a grandma to the sweetest, funniest little 11-month-old around! My husband and I have two dogs and a cat and one of the dogs, Margo is a licensed therapy dog who accompanies me to work. I love reading, camping, and time with friends and family.
The WAVE team is a phenomenal, student-centered, and very knowledgeable group of individuals. They truly care about delivering quality education to your learners in a manner that works best for your family. I am so fortunate to have their expertise as I navigate all the new waters! There is a steep learning curve for me to climb and I appreciate your patience as I do. Please know I, along with this team, will do my best to serve your learners well.

Meet our new counselor, Mrs. Jena Treu!
Hello!
My name is Jena Treu, and I am the new WAVE school counselor! A little bit about me - I have been a school counselor in the Wausau School District for six years, and have worked in a number of buildings covering every grade level! My current work "home" is John Mur, where I have been for five years. I absolutely love my job, and I'm really passionate about working with students and families. As for outside of school - my husband, Paul, and I live in Weston with our three-month-old son Holden and corgis Guinness and Artemis. I love to run, backpack, garden, cook, and listen to podcasts! I am so excited to get to know every member of the WAVE community. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I am here to help!

WAVE School Calendar & Days "Off"
If a student will not be working on a given day, it's best to put more time in leading up to the planned day off to ensure fidelity to the pacing guide and suggested due dates.
Likewise, if a teacher will be taking time off, that teacher will communicate to the student what their WAVE hours will look like.
In summary, with the exception of the black out days below, WAVE does not plan for days off of school, families working with their students have the ability to make scheduling decisions that best meet their personal needs.

You can still message them as needed but don't expect a reply that day.

Hot Spots
The Wausau School District is able to provide families who are lacking adequate internet connectivity with a US Cellular Hotspot. To obtain a Hotspot, a parent or guardian will need to complete and return a WiFi Hotspot Contract. Once a completed contract is received by your child’s school, a hotspot can be checked out from your child’s school.
Key Points:
Hotspots are for school work and instruction only - no personal use
They are filtered in the same manner as school-issued devices
Hotspots can be checked out for the entire school year
They must be returned in good working order, damage free, and with all components
Damaged and unreturned hotspots will result in a fee of $99.00
Missing charging components will result in a fee of $25.00
If you are interested in obtaining a US Cellular Hotspot, please contact our office.

Wausau School District Clubs, Sports, and Activities: Get Involved
AND...
Students have the opportunity to participate in clubs/sports/activities at Wausau East, Wausau West, John Muir, and Horace Mann.
If you live in the Wausau School District, you can participate in these activities at your brick and mortar school of residence (i.e. Westside students participate at John Muir / West, Eastside students participate at Horace Mann/ East.)
If you live out of District, you will have a one time opportunity to align with either the West or Eastside schools for the purpose of participating in sports and activities.
How to get involved:
- Call the brick and mortar school you would be participating at
- Let them know you are a WAVE student and share the event /sport you want to be part of
- The activities director / coach / advisor at that school will help you get involved
- (Bring your WAVE ID with you when you attend in-person activities.)
HAVE FUN! WAVE students have the flexibility of 24/7 learning and the opportunity to participate in the "extras" within the District.
