Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
Parent Teacher Conferences are fast approaching and we are using the online scheduler again this year. As a reminder, the official dates for conferences are below:
October 11, 3:30PM -7:30PM
October 12, 7:30AM -7:30PM (No School for Students)
To schedule your conference please click on the following link:
https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Oak_Hills_Elementary_2
Please follow the steps outlined on the website. If you are having issues with the website, contact your child’s teacher. Unfortunately, our schedule does not allow us to hold separate conferences for divorced or separated families. Please contact the office if there is a court order that mandates an exception to this policy. We look forward to seeing all families at these important meetings. Conferences provide an important opportunity for you to understand how your student is dong both academically and socially. We ask you do not bring your child to your meeting so you can have an honest conversation with your child’s teacher.
On a different note, with the start of rainy weather, we are seeing more students coming to school late. On a rainy day, families should add additional time to drive or walk to school. Our school starts at 8:00am and students who arrive past that time will be considered tardy. Additionally, we would like all 4th and 5th Graders to come through the main entrance in the morning. They will receive an on-time pass before they exit to the portable classrooms. Students without this pass will be asked to return to the office for a late pass. Since students are not released to the portables until 8am, this new policy will help us know which students were on time and/or were late. We will also be able to avoid the continued issue of students congregating around the portables with no supervision. Thank you so much for supporting us on this change.
I understand the sun will be returning this weekend. I hope you will have time to enjoy the outdoors as a family.
Warm regards,
Sheila Baumgardner
Explanation About the News Story on KGW about Oak Hills
Green Screen Experience at Oak Hills' Maker Space
Some of our 2nd through 5th grade students had the opportunity to experience using the Green Screen App with the help of Ryan Hoxie, our Innovation Strategist. Teachers will be exploring ways to incorporate the green screen app into their curriculum. The green screen allows students to record themselves with a variety of digital backgrounds. Here are a few ideas they are exploring:
- Book reviews/talks/recommendations
- Travel back in time to explore history (Lewis & Clark Revolutionary War)
- Explain the forms of energy with examples of each type of energy is the background
- Have kids talk about community with images of their community behind them
- Create a news studio to talk about Portland or Regions
- Bring math problems to life with student explanations and images from an image search.
- Visit the Solar System
- Digital Citizenship
Jogathon
Just a reminder our run will occur on Friday, October 6th.
The Jog-A-Thon is our main fundraiser for the PTO’s general budget, funding a huge variety of our school’s programs and activities. Our goal this year is to raise $35,000 and have 100% student body participation! If each student raised a minimum of $60, we would easily surpass our goals! This year, we have a fun and exciting incentive to meet our goal. If we reach $35,000, Principal Sheila Baumgardner and our Assistant Principal Jennifer DeMartino have agreed to ride tricycles throughout the school for an entire school day dressed in costume! There may even be a race at the assembly. Kids…let’s reach this goal!
We will once again be using Pledgestar in addition to the donation envelopes as a way to reach out to friends and family both near and far. Collecting donations has never been easier, especially from friends and family that live out of town. You need to set up your Pledgestar account every year, but it really is quick and painless. Just visit www.pledgestar.com/oakhills to get started.
It takes a large number of volunteers to make this amazing event and fundraiser happen. We need adults to help tally laps for every class at each grade level as well as helpers for set-up and clean-up. All volunteers and visitors need to complete the district’s volunteer background check before being eligible to work with students and volunteer in the school and classroom. It only takes a few minutes, but needs to be done several weeks before you plan to volunteer at school! Please visit https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/depts/CCI/volunteer-engage to get started.
Jog-A-Thon pledge packets and information went home last Friday. Please review the information provided and feel free to contact the Jog-A-Thon team at jogathon@oakhillspto.org if you have any questions.
Picture Permissions
Google Docs Permissions
Additionally, please consider signing off on the Google Apps for Education permission form if you haven’t done so already. As a Future Ready School, students will be using google docs to create and edit docs, presentations, and spreadsheets on their Chromebooks. Multiple students can work on the same document at the same time, and every change is saved automatically. Many of our teachers will also be using Google Classroom to create, share, and grade assignments. Google Classroom helps improve communication with students and helps create a paperless digital flow. Google Apps for Education is compliant with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act as they do not collect or use student data for advertising purposes or to create ads profiles and they do not share emails for advertising purposes. If you have additional questions or concerns, please feel free to call me.
