Note from Nurse Brittney
May is always a busy month for students: many of our students will participate in state-based testing, fun clubs are taking off, and lots of kids are busy with outdoor sports/activities with the nicer weather. With this flurry of activity, we are noticing an increased trend of students with headaches, stomachaches, or general malaise in the mornings.
With the upcoming state testing schedule this month, we would like to encourage all students to come to school fueled and ready to tackle their day this May (and every day).
Experts agree that getting kids to eat breakfast is important. Breakfast has been associated with many benefits, including:
- Supporting adequate daily intake of nutrients for a growing body
- Positive impacts on memory, attention, mood and school performance in all areas of learning
- Breakfast gives kids the fuel to start the day after a long night of sleep
- 13% of school-aged kids skip breakfast.
If you find yourself skipping breakfast because you're too rushed, try these quick breakfasts. They're easy to grab on the way out the door or get ready the night before:
- single servings of whole-grain, low-sugar cereal or pre-bagged ready to eat
- yogurt
- fresh fruit
- whole-grain muffin
- trail mix
- protein shakes/smoothies
- Make sure to pack a snack for when the mid-morning hunger slump hits that can be eaten before later lunch times
Super short on time? Run out of breakfast items at home? Cottage Lake Elementary has breakfast foods available in the mornings in the cafeteria before school. Northshore School District is part of the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs. All schools offer breakfast and lunch. Menus are available online on the district website along with nutritional information at:

Mental Health Awareness Month resources
Hello Cottage Lake Families,
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and I am excited to share that I am partnering with our intermediate teachers to provide a 3-lesson series on Mental Health. During these lessons students will learn about stress and stress management, emotional awareness, as well as a variety of effective coping strategies. In order for our students to be successful in all aspects of life it's crucial that they understand how to monitor, manage, and seek support when needed for their mental health.
If you're interested in having conversations related to anxiety and overcoming fears at home, then check out this awesome video series from Child Mind Institute called Nixie and Nimbo. While created for Kindergarteners, these videos would be informative and relatable for all elementary aged students. Beyond anxiety and overcoming fears, Child Mind Institute is a great resource to know about when it comes to supporting your child's mental health and well-being!
https://childmind.org/nixieandnimbo/
I am also excited to announce a recent partnership between the Northshore School District and the mental health support and referral program known as Care Solace. For more information on this program, please see the attached message from Care Solace below:
Chances are that you know someone who is struggling with their mental health. People experiencing mental health challenges aren’t broken — they need support and care. And that begins with a conversation.
This month we have an opportunity to break the stigma around mental health by talking openly, compassionately, and kindly to each other. No one should ever struggle alone.
If you want to quickly be connected to a mental health care provider, contact Care Solace, a complimentary and confidential mental health care coordination service provided by Northshore School District 417:
- Call 888-515-0595. Multilingual support is available 24/7/365.
- Visit www.caresolace.com/nsd and either search on your own OR click “Book Appointment” for assistance by video chat, email, or phone.
Don’t hesitate to ask for help, use the resources around you, and never give up hope.
2023-24 Intent to Return survey
To assist in this process, I am asking ALL families in grades K-4 to complete the below survey. Please complete one survey per family.
If you have questions, please reach out to ask. The response window has been extended and will now close on Sunday, May 7. Thank you!
COVID update
The Department of Health (DOH) requires schools to inform families and students about COVID-19 case numbers and potential outbreaks. Over the past two weeks, there has been a total of 2 confirmed cases at our school. The accuracy of our data depends on self-reporting. Thank you for continuing to let the school know if your child tests positive for COVID-19. To view additional information, including school and district trends visit the District’s COVID-19 data dashboard. The dashboard is updated weekly on Monday evenings.
If your child is exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 keep them home and test for COVID-19. Families can order free COVID-19 tests from the state. Together, we can keep our schools healthy and safe.

•• District News ••
2022 Technology Levy updates at Cottage Lake!
This spring, 200 classrooms across Northshore (including our classrooms at Cottage Lake!) have receiving updates to technology equipment used by educators for classroom instruction. Interactive LED panels and audio amplification systems. Some of the systems being modernized have been in use for 13 years, serving as some of the original interactive boards and audio systems used in Northshore classrooms.
These interactive LED panels are used by students and staff to draw, display multimedia, and present information. The audio amplification systems are hands-free tools that project the voice of the teacher and students across the room. These research-backed technology tools create more efficiency and accessibility for students to access instruction. These improvements were made possible thanks to the generous support of Northshore voters, who approved the 2022 Technology Levy.
May 2 - Student Wellness and Support conversations with School Board
Dear Northshore Families, Students, and Staff:
Multiple times a year, the School Board invites the Northshore Community to speak with them directly about issues of interest and concern. The next Conversation with the Board is Tuesday, May 2 from 6-7:30 p.m. The spring session will be held at Inglemoor High School (15500 Simonds Rd NE, Kenmore, WA 98028) in the library. This is an in-person event and won’t be live streamed. Spanish interpretation and translation will be available onsite.
The May 2 conversation will focus on Student Wellness and Support. Participants will have the opportunity to respond to several open-ended questions related to student wellness and support including: health and wellness, belonging, connection, and campus safety.
Comments and feedback gathered at the May 2 event will be analyzed, themed, and provided back to the School Board as well as the Student Wellness and Safety Task Force.
We hope to see you there!
May 2 - Instructional materials review opportunities
Dear Northshore Families, Staff, and Students,
As a Northshore community, we value students building a sense of belonging through learning that affirms their identities and honors their peers and community as a whole. The fundamental right of each student to see themselves in the classroom learning materials is critical. The District has scheduled two opportunities on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 to review instructional materials in connection with these values, and we welcome families, staff, and students to attend.
Middle School Novels Refresh
Northshore educators and staff have been piloting novels throughout the year to recommend for addition into our classrooms as supplemental materials. Families, staff, and students are invited to join us on Tuesday, May 2 any time between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Admin Center, 3330 Monte Villa Parkway to view the 6th-8th grade novels that have been piloted this year by grade band and share your thoughts. For questions, please contact nsmith2@nsd.org.
High School Ethnic Studies Curricular Units
The Ethnic Studies class offered to students in high school has been piloting materials to recommend for adoption moving forward. Families, staff, and students are invited to join us on Tuesday, May 2 any time between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. in Room 208 at the Admin Center, 3330 Monte Villa Parkway to view these curricular units and share your thoughts. For questions, please contact EthnicStudies@nsd.org.
Spring Superintendent Learning Sessions announced
During the spring, Superintendent Michael Tolley will host spring superintendent learning sessions as a way to share with our families, students, and staff the information he learned from his fall Listen and Learn tour. These events also provide an opportunity for the superintendent to continue to listen to our Northshore community members about their experiences in our schools. The dates and audience for each session are:

Community Serve Day Site Lead Volunteer Opportunity
Community Serve Day is an annual event where local churches, schools, non-profits and businesses come together for our schools. For one day, our community comes together to help our school prepare for the coming year by helping set up classrooms, making improvements to the campuses and more. It’s a unique opportunity to make connections with other CLE families and to support the amazing staff as they get ready to welcome students to the new school year. Each school needs to have a Site Lead in order to participate in the event and this coming summer Cottage Lake Elementary will need a new Site Lead.
The position involves
- Participating in one or two informational/planning meetings leading up to the event.
- Helping to promote the event through the PTA and school social media in order to gather volunteers.
- Assisting volunteers with job assignments on the day of the event.
The Site Lead will be fully supported by the coordinator at Northshore Community Church and fellow Leads, who have plenty of experience and advice to share. The only requirement is a desire to help support CLE and it’s amazing staff!
If it’s something you would consider, please reach out to me at buffyanson@yahoo.com
