Oasis Charter Elementary Monthly Newsletter

August 15, 2016

Volume 1, Issue 1

The 16-17 school year is underway, and the excitement throughout our campus is awesome to see. Our teachers and staff have been preparing classrooms and planning exciting lessons for many weeks. From engaging academic activities, memorable field trips, and countless events for the entire family, this looks to be one of the brightest years here at Oasis Elementary.

Thank you all for coming out to our Open House on Monday. With about 98% of families in attendance, it was a very successful event.

While I have only been at Oasis for a few weeks, I was able to meet individually with each teacher. The purpose of the meetings was for them to share with me the great things happening at OES, along with one thing they could change if given the opportunity. From those conversations, and my own assessments, we will have three major focus areas this school year: (1) PROVIDING A SAFE, SECURE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR KIDS, (2) ENSURING STUDENTS RECEIVE THE BEST-POSSIBLE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE, (3) PROVIDING STUDENT INCENTIVES FOR POSITIVE BEHAVIOR.

I invite all of you to come out to one of the Meet the Principal events to hear more details about these focus areas, and to ask any questions you might have of me. On Monday, August 22 from 6:30-7:30 p.m., parents of Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students are invited. Parents of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are invited to attend on Thursday, August 25, also from 6:30-7:30 p.m. If you have kids in multiple grades, pick the day that works best for you.

I thank you for allowing us to work with your kids. I look forward to the challenge of getting us back to an "A" school.

  • Please remain in your vehicle.
  • Please do not drop off children in any parking lots - this is extremely unsafe.
  • New name tags will be coming to you on Tuesday - please begin using the new name tags on Wednesday.
  • Please do not drop off your child before 8:00 a.m.
  • Our hallways open at 8:00 a.m. - classrooms open at 8:15 a.m.
  • Students arriving after 8:30 a.m. will be marked tardy.

  • Please do not arrive on campus before 3:00 p.m. - middle school traffic is still clearing out.
  • Please remain in your vehicle.
  • You will be asked to park and come into the front office if you do not have a name tag for your child.

  • Try to note any dismissal changes in your child's planner.
  • Please notify our office by 2:00 p.m. if you need to change the way your child is going home.

As we experienced on Friday, sometimes Mother Nature does not cooperate during our dismissal. We will be using the WeatherBug app and the Baker High School lightning detection system to help guide our decision-making at dismissal as it pertains to bad weather. If we learn that lightning is within 10 miles of the school, please understand that dismissal procedures will change, and the process will be slightly slower.

All students and staff will seek shelter. For our K-1st grade students, they will remain in the interior areas of the breezeway or the cafeteria. Vehicles will move to one line only for pick-up. We will load cars if it is safe enough. If the lightning is extremely close, you may need to come into the cafeteria to pick up your child. If you do not want to exit your vehicle to come into the cafeteria, you may remain in your vehicle until the storm passes.

For our 2nd-5th graders, they will all be moved to the gym. If you would like to pick-up your child during a storm, you will need to come to the gym. If you do not want to exit your vehicle to come to the gym, you may remain in your vehicle until the storm passes.

We appreciate your patience during inclement weather.

To be permitted on campus, you must first complete the Parent Volunteer Application Form. Once your application has been screened, you will be allowed on campus and can begin earning volunteer hours.

All volunteers need to sign in through our front office. Please wear your office-issued sticker at all times while on campus. If you are interested in volunteering in a classroom, please be sure the teacher knows you are coming.

If you have been asked to volunteer in a classroom, please do not bring younger children with you.

We welcome you to periodically have lunch with your child. Space is limited. Four picnic tables are located between the cafeteria and the gym for you to have lunch with your child. If you do come for lunch, you may only take your child with you from the cafeteria.

We love celebrating our students birthdays. All celebrations will take place in the cafeteria. You are welcome to stay to distribute the treats. I would recommend not bringing younger children with you, as there is very little extra room for visitors in the cafeteria.

Please limit treats to store-bought items such as cupcakes, cookies, or fruit. Please no cakes, party favors, balloons, etc.

Focus is a web-based program parents may use to access their child's grades.

Simply click the button below to access the site. Directions for signing on for the first time can be found on the homepage.

While on campus (in the breezeway, hallways, classrooms, airnasium, gymnasium, cafeteria, etc.), student's electronic devices should be on silent and put away in backpacks or purses.

Teachers have the option of allowing students to use their electronic devices in their own classroom, if appropriate.

Students will be allowed to wear jeans every Friday if they are a member of our JEANS CLUB. The fee to join the JEANS CLUB will be $20 per child. Joining the club will allow your child to wear jeans every Friday for the entire school year.

This Friday, August 19, will be a free jeans day. We will be collecting the $20 fee through You may also bring in a check or cash to your child's teacher on Friday, August 26.
