Spotlight on Schools: KELLY ELEMENTARY

Big picture

Reinventing, innovating—that’s what is happening at Carlsbad Unified’s schools.

Last year the staff at Kelly Elementary School worked to create their own mission/vision statement. They began with Carlsbad Unified’s Graduate Profile, and then wrote their own descriptors for Kelly students, coming up with the acronym CREATE: Curious learners, Respectful students, Empathetic citizens, Ambitious individuals, Take initiative, Empowered learners.

SPOTLIGHT ON SCHOOLS: MAGNOLIA ELEMENTARY

Big picture

When the first Magnolia Elementary students walked through its doors in 1957, they entered classrooms with straight rows of desks and chalkboards. Today, with funding from Measure HH, the school has been reimagined to become a newer, sharper, more functional campus that retains its mid-century charm and curb appeal. Students and staff are looking forward to entering new classrooms equipped with current technology and innovative learning spaces.

The school’s remodel is exciting, but so, too, is what’s already happening in its classrooms.

Implementation of new Visitor Management System

CUSD is pleased to announce that we are implementing a new Visitor Management System to strengthen our program of campus safety for students and faculty. This type of system was strongly requested by parents, has successfully been used in other districts, and is approved by local law enforcement. Carlsbad Unified School District is providing the system and related materials to every school in the district; the equipment is being paid for as part of the voter-approved Measure HH bond program.

Part of keeping students and faculty safe is knowing who is in our buildings at all times, and our Visitor Management System will allow us to do that. The system will better allow us to screen visitors and volunteers in our schools and provide us with a safer environment for our students and staff.

The equipment has been installed in every school office, and every site will be operational in the coming months.

When the system is up and running at your school site, visitors will be asked to present an ID such as a Driver License, which can either be scanned or manually entered into the system. The LobbyGuard system will check to ensure that registered sexual offenders are not entering our school campuses without our knowledge. Once entry is approved, the system will issue a badge that identifies the visitor, the date, and the purpose of the visit. A visitor badge will not be necessary for those who visit our schools simply to drop off an item in the office or pick up paperwork.

The safety of our students is our highest priority, and our new Visitor Management System will provide additional protection at all sites.
