MaryAnn Burns was honored with a joint legislative resolution from the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey for her act of heroism, which saved the life of a Franklin Elementary School student. A lunch aide previously employed for two decades as a licensed practical nurse at Muhlenberg Medical Center, Burns used the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge a piece of bagel stuck in the throat of a fourth grader who was choking and unable to breathe.

Senator Patrick Diegnan was honored to present the President’s Volunteer Service Award to Woodrow Wilson Middle School eighth grader Sri Nihal Tammana, co-founder of Recycle My Battery, and other New Jersey members of the student-run and led nonprofit. Since its inception in 2019, Recycle My Battery, which heightens awareness about the hazards improperly disposed consumer batteries pose to the environment and recycling centers, has collected more than 200,000 consumer batteries for safe recycling. Senator Patrick Diegnan had a wonderful time celebrating Read Across America Day with Ms. Simpson’s fourth-grade class at Roosevelt Elementary School in South Plainfield and with Ms. Fallone's fourth-grade class at James Monroe Elementary School in Edison. He was genuinely impressed with the students' enthusiasm and reading skills.
MAKING SPORTS SAFER FOR NEW JERSEY STUDENTS
During National Athletic Training Month, we celebrate the paramount work of athletic trainers. Senator Patrick Diegnan has been privileged to collaborate with Athletic Trainers Society of New Jersey members to sponsor bills signed into law that make our state a national leader in managing catastrophic injury risk to student-athletes. Some of those laws are highlighted below.
IRISH-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
New Jersey celebrated Saint Patrick's Day during the state's first annual Irish-American Heritage Month as the result of Senator Patrick Diegnan's legislation, which Governor Phil Murphy signed into law. Read more
HONORING A SELFLESS HERO AND ADVOCATE
Senator Patrick Diegnan was honored to attend a dedication ceremony for Sgt. Jack McGreevey Memorial Park in Carteret. A combat veteran of World War II and the Korean War, McGreevey was a longtime borough resident. “He dedicated his life to serving our country and advocating for veterans and their families,” Carteret Mayor Dan Reiman said. “This dedication is a tribute to his selfless service and lifelong commitment.” McGreevey’s children carry on his legacy.
