Happy Holidays Seahawk Families
This is a busy time of the year for our students, families and staff. We are preparing for holiday choir and band concerts, winter sports in full swing, and we will soon be preparing for semester finals scheduled for January 22, 23, and 24.
Mark your calendars for Friday, December 13 as this is our 11th annual spirit competition with Burlington Edison High School. The TIGER HAWK CHALLENGE will take place in our beautiful new gymnasium this year with varsity girls and boys basketball teams competing on this special evening – girls at 6:00 pm and boys at 8:00 pm. Schools are judged in the following categories: a) crowd noise, b) organized group cheer, c) drum line performances, d) cheer squad performances, and e) attendance. Always a sellout event, we will pre-sell tickets starting on Monday, December 9. You may purchase tickets from our Athletic window from 7:30 am – 3:00 pm daily. Cost are $6 for adults and students without ASB stickers. $3 for senior citizens, visiting high school students / families and active duty military. We will provide cheer props to our students for the organized student group cheer. The focus of the evening is on positive sportsmanship and school spirit demonstrated throughout the evening. Our goal is to fill the gym with enthusiastic fans wearing PURPLE. Let’s show BEHS that we have positive school spirit, not to mention some outstanding basketball teams. I encourage those who have never attended this event to make this the first of many resolutions within the coming weeks – you will not be disappointed. This event will sell out fast.
Our Holiday Band Concert is scheduled for Monday, December 9 at 6:30 pm in the AMS gymnasium. Our Holiday Choir Concert is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec 17 at 7:00 pm in the AHS Commons. We hope you are able to attend these special holiday events and hear some wonderful sounds of the season!
December is also a time when we welcome back recent AHS graduates and have them speak to their high school classes and experiences that helped prepare them for post-secondary educational endeavors. Graduates from the Class of 2019 will visit with students on Friday, December 20 – always an informative and enlightening time for our students.
Lastly, I wish all of you the Happiest of Holidays and a restful winter break. A special shout out to our our military parents on deployment during this holiday season. We are appreciative of your service to our country.
Happy Holidays and See You in 2020!
In Seahawk Pride!

Vape Education at AHS in January 2020
National and statewide outbreaks of lung injury associated with e-cigarettes and vapor products have started to show up in our community health centers. The only commonality among all cases is that patients report the use of e-cigarettes or vapor products. CDC has identified vitamin E acetate as a chemical of concern among people with vaping associated lung injury, but we don’t know enough yet to rule out other possible causes. There's still more research to be done, and there may be more than one cause.
Anacortes High School recognizes the need to educate our community on this important topic and we formally invite you to our school on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. Nurse Tammy Akard, a Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist and Leslie Hammonds, a Registered Respiratory Therapist will be present to provide education around the topic of vaping and its related health consequences. We look forward to seeing you in the Anacortes High School Commons on January 15th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Counseling Center Announcements - December 2019
Important Reminder for Seniors
College Application Deadlines
Seniors, please make sure to speak to your school counselor right away if you have any Common Application deadlines coming up in early January during or after winter break.
Counselors need three weeks advance notice to ensure that the required secondary school report can be completed in time.
Please remember to give all staff members at least three weeks notice when inquiring about a possible letter of recommendation.
Financial Aid Deadlines for College
If you are going on to a Technical, Two-Year or Four-Year College after graduation, be sure to complete your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) asap if you have not already done so via the FAFSA.GOV website.
Completed Senior Experience Questionnaire Paperwork Due 1/24/20
Winter break is an excellent time to finish your Senior Experience project!
The required completion questionnaires can be found in the Class of 20 Google Classroom.
Please speak to your school counselor or Advisory teacher if you have questions about the final completion forms.
Graduation Products
Seniors recently attended a graduation products meeting in November. They brought home order information for caps and gowns along with other items that may be purchased for graduation. Please know that the only items required to purchase are the cap, gown and tassel. Feel free to visit the Herff Jones website at highschool.herffjones.com.
Scholarships
Remember to check the Counseling Center Scholarship web page regularly for new scholarship opportunities.
The Collegeboard and the Washboard.org are additional websites with helpful scholarship resources.
Students who have taken the PSAT and/or SAT already have a Collegeboard account and can use it to save scholarship searches and results.
4-Year Course Plan Updates
School counselors will be out in ninth through eleventh grade English classrooms during the first two weeks of December to work with students on updating their 4-year course plans.
We will also be reviewing graduation and college admission requirements.
Parents, please ask your student to login to the Google Classroom for their grade level and show you their 4-year plan if you would like to see it.
ASVAB Testing
Students in grades 10-12 who are interested in taking the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude & Battery) assessment may sign up in the counseling center. The ASVAB will take place on Tuesday, December 10 at 8 A.M. There is no cost to take the ASVAB, which is required for students planning to enlist in the military and is also very helpful as a career assessment tool.
Annual Running Start Info Night - February 19th
Early Notification: Annual Running Start Program Info Night on February 19th at 6 p.m. at AHS.
All tenth and eleventh graders interested in learning more about the Running Start dual high school/college enrollment program, along with your parents/guardians, are strongly encouraged to attend.
SAT or ACT Testing
Most four year colleges require applicants to submit scores from either the SAT of the ACT. Four year college-bound students are encouraged to take it more than once. This will give students a chance to use the higher of the test scores. Colleges in WA State will accept either the SAT or the ACT. For
out-of-state schools, please check the Admissions page for the college(s) you are interested in attending to verify their admissions test requirements. AHS is a testing site for the SAT on 06/06/20.
SAT registration and dates can be found at
