RCE fifth grader wins district spelling bee
Running Creek Elementary fifth grader Luci Samaco, center in the photo below, won the Elizabeth School District Spelling Bee on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at EHS. She will represent the district at the state spelling bee on March 5 at the University of Denver.
Other top finishers at the district bee were (at left) EMS sixth grader Carlee Schulthies in second place, and (at right) Legacy Academy fifth grader Maddie Jobes, in third place. In all, 17 students qualified for the district bee, four from EMS, Legacy, RCE and Singing Hills Elementary.
The bee lasted nearly two hours and used up the main list of 160 words as well as the list of extra words. Eventually, the judges went to a second backup set of words that the students had not seen on a study list.

EHS students raise nearly $1,000 to help fire victims
Elizabeth High School students donated $985 on Jan. 21 to help people from Boulder County who were affected by last month's fires.
Freshmen Student Council representatives, pictured from left, Brooke Hicks, Katie Owen and Abbi Monchak organized the effort with help from sophomore Meghan Benkendorf and senior Abby Schleisman.
“We chose this fundraiser because losing your home and belongings is very tragic,” Katie said. “Originally we were planning on donating physical objects but then we heard the victims needed money and gift cards most, so we changed our ideas!”
The fundraising challenge took place during homeroom morning announcements in a “Minute To Win It” format: A one-minute timer was set, and the class which put the most money in a bag won doughnuts. That class turned out to be science teacher Lilyann Lambert’s class with more than $100 raised in one room.
Denver Museum of Nature and Science field trip adds to 4th grade study of Colo.
The fourth grade from Running Creek Elementary took a field trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on Friday, Jan. 21. "As usual, the kids were fantastic!" said fourth-grade teacher Janet Walker Snider. "The museum offers a Colorado symbols scavenger hunt, and the kids found all of the items. At fourth grade we study Colorado, so it matched up with what we have taught perfectly."
