Spreading Kindness at Rutherford
If you don't know how to spread kindness, here's a way you can! Write someone a kindness quote. For instance, "If life's a game aren't we all on the same team?"- by Kid President. Kindness is important because it broadens life's frame of reference. People use it as a sign of respect to value the receiver. All your words and actions define the world you want to live in. Kindness leads you to a more fulfilling life and it feels good! It fosters kindness in return. Anytime! Anywhere! Anyway! YOU decide what kindness looks like. Be creative and be you! No act is too small or to big.

Yoga Balls in the Classroom
If you're like me, to replace your chair for a ball, you might feel that the ball isn't tall enough for you so you might move around a lot and get no work done. I think sitting on a yoga ball is bad for you. Some kids think yoga balls are better for them! In room 215, our teacher has purchased most of the students yoga balls because it provides an opportunity for students to get on track and stay focused. My teacher, Mr. Nerino, would love for all students to have yoga balls, but students need to have a good attitude and do the right things while sitting on them. I know there are a few other teachers in our school that use yoga balls too!
So, what do you choose, a yoga ball or a chair?
Homework... why is it so important?
Did you ever wonder why we get homework? Well, homework is important because it can develop your skills taught in the classroom. You can get higher points if you do your homework everyday. Teachers give homework to help us practice what was taught. You might have good consequences if you do your homework all the time. If you choose not to do your homework there are bad consequences. You might owe recess or get a homework notice. You might also not do well on your test and quiz. Homework is a way to practice what you are learning in school.
Should we have more time at lunch?
Zones of Regulation
All school year we have been referring to the zones... blue, yellow, red, and green. Our goal is to be in the green zone as much as possible! Being in the green zone means we are ready to learn. If we find ourselves needing to get back into the green zone for some reason here are some quick tips you can do:
- Find 5 things you can see
- Find 4 things you can touch
- Find 3 things you can hear
- Find 2 things you can smell
- Find 1 thing you can taste
This is called grounding but if this doesn't work then sit down or get a drink of water (take a break). This should help you get back into the green zone.
Here are some more tips if you find yourself not in the green zone:
ZONES TOOLBOX
- RED ZONE--TAKE A BREAK, DRINK WATER ,TAKE A WALK, SQUEEZE SOMETHING SQUISHY.
- YELLOW ZONE--CALM DOWN, SQUISH SOMETHING, TAKE A WALK.
- GREEN ZONE--GREAT JOB KEEP ON GOING!
- BLUE--TAKE A WALK, GET A DRINK, THINK EXCITING THOUGHTS, JUMPING JACKS
Pay it Forward
Some ideas to pay it forward and spread kindness in our school are:
- you could smile at someone when you pass them in the hall
- give someone a kindness quote
- laugh at someone's jokes
- play with someone new at recess
- keep people positive by saying great job, keep it up, and your doing great!

Tips for the PSSA
Somethings for you to get prepared for the PSSA are:
- going to bed early in the day so your brain and body can be more ready and focused for the PSSA
- Have a healthy breakfast because if you don't eat, you would just think about something like food and daydream and get none of your PSSA done
- Another thing is that you should approach the test like a giant jigsaw puzzle. It might be tough but you can finish it! Have a positive attitude because they go a long way toward success.
- You should also read all of the instructions CAREFULLY before starting the PSSA tests because you want to make sure you are marking all your answers down correctly.
- We all know that those hard and tricky problems can knock you off your balance but don't get worried or frustrated. Reread the question carefully to make sure you understand it, then try your best to solve it. If the question you are on still isn't working your way, circle the question number, move on and finish the easier questions first. What if you have no idea about the answer? Review your options and make the best guess you can. In multiple choice questions, the process of elimination can help you choose the correct answer. Start by crossing out the answers that you are 100% sure that won't be correct. Then, spend your time focusing on the possibly, correct choices before selecting your answer.
- One last tip, when you say you are done with the test, make sure you have double checked and reviewed all your answers and checked if you have made any careless mistakes, such as putting the correct answer in the wrong place or putting two answers where there is only supposed to be one.
- Finally, the last remaining time to go over the hardest problems on the test.
You should never be scared or worried about a test with things you have been learning all year!! Carefully follow the directions that were given and always, try to do your best!
