Principal Message
It is of the utmost importance that all students come to school dressed appropriately for the cold weather. Some students are choosing to come to school dressed in only a hoodie and runners.
Please make sure to send your child(ren) to school with boots, gloves, and hats. Weather permitting, all students will continue to go outside for recess and gym class.
We are asking your help and support to make sure that all students are warm and safe while they are outside.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at alyrem@eics.ab.ca or 780-467-5631.
Thank you to Mme Hogan and parents who cleaned off the staff vehicle after the snow fall on Wednesday. It was greatly appreciated.
God Bless,

A Reading From The Gospel for Sunday, January 12, 2020
January 12, 2019 ~ A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness."
Then John consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.
And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased."
The Gospel of the Lord.

Grade 8 Farewell Photos Needed
Grade 8 Farewell Photos Needed
It's that time of year again when we start to prepare for the Grade 8 Farewell which will be held on Friday, June 12th at 6 pm at the OLPH Parish Hall (basement).
In preparation for the evening, we are requesting that each student submit two photos.
1. A "baby" photo (0-2 years of age)
2. A current photo (headshot preferably but it doesn't have to be)
3.(Optional) School memory photos- photos of students from their early years enjoying school activities. Ex. Kindergarten Halloween parties. If school friends are together at birthday parties, those photos may be used as well. Groups of students are preferable to just single students as we could include as many students as possible who may not have access to those types of photos.
It is vital that all the photos be clear and of good resolution as they will be part of a slideshow presentation.
These photos may be either scanned/sent to me by email (deniseg@eics.ab.ca), or I can scan them on the photocopier here at school and return the printed photo to you.
If the photo is in a scrapbook, please do NOT take it out as I can scan it and crop it on the computer.
Please include your child's name in the subject heading of the email or on the envelope containing the photos and ensure that your teen is comfortable with the images chosen.
The "NOW" photo will also be the one used in the yearbook Farewell section.
Please send both photos to Mme Gagnon by Friday, January 31st at the latest.
Merci for your assistance in collecting these photos.
Blessings,
Mme Denise Gagnon (deniseg@eics.ab.ca)

Hello Again!!
We hope your family has been enjoying the school year so far! As everyone is back at school, we recognize that this is still a very busy time of year.
As a result, we wanted to give parents plenty time to get their Hot Lunch orders in for the 2nd semester so we have prepared Munchalunch well in advance:)
The following information is for our Hot Lunch Program (still a fundraiser for the Grade 8 trip). Munchalunch will be opened on TUESDAY, JANUARY 7th, 2020. Please be sure to complete your order before SUNDAY, JANUARY 26th, 2020. Please be aware of any field trips your child may be attending on a hot lunch day! We are excited to continue to offer familiar vendors and some healthier options. Here is what you need to know:

• If your child is absent on a hot lunch day (most days are Wednesdays, but please check your schedule to see if your child will be away for any athletics, dance, other activities or family vacation), you are welcome to come pick it up during lunchtime, or feel free to email olphhotlunch8@gmail.com with any special instructions as to what to do with the hot lunch. In the absence of instructions or it being picked up, it will be given to admin to be redistributed. Unfortunately, NO REFUNDS can be issued for missed hot lunches.
• Please note that every effort has been made to be allergy aware and provide allergen-free options, but we cannot guarantee the absence of any allergens. Please contact the vendors directly if you have questions about any allergies or ingredients.

Accountability Pillar Survey ~ Alberta Education
Dear Elk Island Catholic School Families,
Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey in the new year. The Blanket Exercise
Dear Parents and Staff:
Parents and Staff of EICS students are invited to take part in a Blanket Exercise to be held at Central Learning Services (310 Broadview Road) in Sherwood Park on Wednesday, January 15, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The Blanket Exercise is an active participation learning activity based on the major themes and findings of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. The goal is to build understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. Everyone is actively involved as they step onto blankets that represent the land, and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and later Métis peoples. By engaging on an emotional and intellectual level, the Blanket Exercise effectively educates and increases empathy. For further information, please view this KAIROS Blanket Exercise video.
Participants are asked to bring a blanket that can be placed on the floor and stepped on for this activity.
Please RSVP by Monday, January 13 by filling out this linked Google Form.
We will also have Eva Stang join us at this event. Eva, a Métis Culture and Knowledge Keeper, has been working with EICS this year, supporting the continued growth in staff and administrator knowledge of Indigenous perspectives.
If you have any questions, please email Crystal Cholin, Learning Services Consultant (crystalc@eics.ab.ca).
École OLPH School Fees
Please be advised that all school fees have been posted on your parent portal. Your fees are now due.
You are able to make payments on-line or by cheque at the office. We would, however, like to encourage you to pay your school fees on-line. All cheques must be made payable to EICS. In addition, you may divide your payments either on-line or by postdated cheques.
If you require any assistance with these fees, the Division offers a "Fee Waiver Program".

Dear Parents,
``A personally owned device must meet the educational needs of the school and district. The ability for a student to use any form of technology within school is a privilege. If the student doesn’t follow the guidelines the student may lose the privilege of using the device and network access may be suspended.``
" The student must comply with a staff request to shutdown the device or put the screen to sleep"
" Violation of any EICS School Board policies, Administrative Procedures, Responsible Use Agreement, this user agreement or school rules involving a student’s personally owned device may result in the loss of use of the device in school and/or disciplinary action"
During instructional time, students have the privilege to use their devices, but if they are playing games, etc, they are guilty of not following the contract they have signed.

School Council Corner

Voyage Quebec 2021: We are looking for 5-7 parents from both english and french programs that have children currently in grade 7 to meet at the end of January to provide input and feedback to Voyage Quebec 2021. There will be two trips next year and one fundraising committee and we would like input on how best to work with parents to support their fundraising efforts. The trips are organized by the school but the Grade 8 Fundraising Committee works under the OLPH School Association to give parents the opportunity to earn back part of the trip's cost. Please email us at olphschoolcouncil@gmail.com if you are interested*.
*Please note that this an advisory role and not the group forming next year's fundraising team.
A reminder to like us on Facebook or follow us on Instagram @olphschoolcouncil to receive regular updates on activities around the school.
We still have our ongoing Fundraisers - Fundscrip with invite code PETQYC and be sure to mention OLPH when buying from Cobs on Wye Road - we receive 5% back on your purchase.
Hope to see you at our upcoming meeting or one of our special events!

École OLPH - Nut Aware School
Dear Parents,
With the increase of students with serious allergies in our school, we are attempting to create a “Nut-Aware” environment.
We request that you refrain from sending peanut-butter sandwiches, cookies & treats that contain nuts and any nut-based snacks.
Every child’s health & safety are important to us and we appreciate your active concern and response to this request.
God Bless.
École OLPH Canteen
Dear Parents
Each item on the cart will sell for a dollar. Please bring small change only.
On hot lunch days there are times when vendors send extra food. If this is the case your child would be more than welcome to purchase any extra items.

End of Day Procedures
Please make sure that you child(ren) know if they are to take the bus or if they are getting picked up at the end of the day.
Should a student need to confirm their end of day plans, we ask that all students make their arrangements during the morning recess (10:19 a.m. - 10:34 a.m.) or during the lunch hour (12:04 p.m. - 12:47 p.m.).
This will reduce the confusion and rush at the end of the day and will also ensure that your child(ren) does not miss the bus.
If a student comes to the office at the end of the day and are unsure how they are getting home, we will be sending them home on the bus.
God Bless
