Book Club Guidelines & Goals

We've had a fantastic participation level to kick off this year's WKMS Learning Commons Book Club. We have over 20 members who are reading books and other materials of their choice for the nine weeks, and we meet every Thursday morning at 7:40 to talk about what they are reading. At least twice a year we choose a group book to read and discuss, but the regular goal for students is to let them select what they want to read and share the experience.

Fall 2018 Scholastic Book Fair In the WKMS Learning Commons

During the last week of September, the WKMS Learning Commons hosted the school's book fair. Students visited before school, during lunch, and after school. It was well attended. In addition, several of the language arts classes visited and purchased books. There were graphic novels, non-fiction, fiction, cookbooks, and South Carolina Junior Book Award nominees available. We will also be hosting another Scholastic Fair this spring.

Free eBooks To Explore

When it comes to eBooks, you have several options to explore. Through DISCUS, South Carolina's online state library program, you can access eBooks through TumbleBooks. TubmbleBooks has over 1100 titles and includes animated, talking picture books, read-along chapter books, National Geographic videos, non-fiction books, fiction books, graphic novels, and books in Spanish and French, and much more! To access TumbleBooks in DISCUS, contact your school librarian, Dr. Conrath, for the state's username and password for DISCUS.

Another great eBooks resource is MackinVia. MackinVia is a digital content management system that provides easy access to eBooks, read-alongs, audiobooks and more. Students can access the school's eBook collection through MackinVia through the app on their iPad; they simply use the same username and password they use for their other sign-ons.

Beyond your learning commons eBook choices, students may also find eBooks through the Lexington County Library. Their Web address for digital downloads is http://www.lex.lib.sc.us/downloads.asp Lexington County Public Library offers eBooks and graphic novels through Hoopla and OverDrive. There are thousands of titles to explore.

Classroom Book Reading and Check-Out Time!

Sometimes it works out better for students for the learning commons to go to you. During the last full week of October, Dr. Conrath visited three classrooms, read a book to the class, talked about the free eBook options, and checked out books to students from a cart. If you would like the LC to come to your class, please drop by to schedule a visit.
