Dear Middle School Families:
As you know, the Mount Horeb Area School District has issued all students an interactive Chromebook for educational use at school. Your child will use this same device for the entirety of his/her middle school career while attending the Mount Horeb Area School District. This is also the same device your child used when they were in fifth grade.
Our District is committed to preparing students for success in school and beyond. Part of this preparation includes making sure students are exposed to technology and are taught how to use technology appropriately. Providing individual devices that they are responsible for operating and maintaining will equip students with 21st Century skills including collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity.
Training and Chromebook care information was provided to all sixth-grade students at the beginning of the school year with these expectations repeated and modeled by teachers during this first semester. You will find a copy of these expectations on the Student Expectations for Chromebook Usage Agreement linked below. This document should look familiar.
The purpose of this letter is to inform families of this occurrence and provide information about the next steps. The district has purchased a three-year warranty to cover normal use, mechanical breakdown, or faulty construction; this warranty does not cover damage caused by misuse, negligence, or abuse. Note if there are multiple damages or incidences of damage, Chromebook privileges may be altered. Examples of these are provided below.
Please know that the majority of our students are making good choices with this learning tool. We look forward to growing with the students and learning with them. However, we also need your help. Please review the Student Expectations for Chromebook Usage agreement, linked below with your student.
Sincerely,
Paul Christiansen
Principal
Similar to textbooks, if a Chromebook is negligently damaged or lost while assigned to an individual student, that student and his/her family will be contacted to cover the cost of the Chromebook repair or replacement. The District will decide whether a device was damaged due to student negligence or accidental care. The following are approximate costs of Chromebook parts and replacements:
Chromebook Insurance
Did you know that purchasing Chromebook insurance can save a significant amount of money if your child happens to damage their district issued Chromebook?
The insurance is $25 and is entered into Infinite Campus as a registration fee. If you pay for it, your child is completely covered and will not be charged for damages. It was not a mandatory fee during registration. However, if you did not pay for insurance, it will still show up as a fee pending in Infinite Campus.
The good news is that you are still able to purchase insurance if you have not already done so. Enrolling in insurance after any damage will require paying the replacement fee (the higher cost). A recent example is one student who had a broken screen that was covered with the $25 insurance fee. Another student had the same damage and needed to pay over $50.
Please consider purchasing this to avoid expensive charges throughout the school year. https://mounthorebwi.infinitecampus.org/campus/portal/mthoreb.jsp
Additional insurance details include:
- Insurance covers the charger, multiple damages, a loaner Chromebook, and the entire device as a whole.
- Insurance lasts for the entire school year
- If your child receives a second device due to the first device being deemed unusable, you may purchase insurance for that device. However, if you did not pay for insurance prior to the first device being damaged, you will be charged accordingly.
- Damage fees are posted in Infinite Campus, and you are notified directly of those fees.
