Early Years

-Samuel Langhorne Clemens

- Born on Nov. 30, 1835 in Florida, Mo.

- Four years after his birth in 1839 they moved 35 miles east to Hannibal. Hannibal was a growing port city that was located on the Mississippi River, many steam boats stopped there from St. Louis and New Orleans.

-When Samuel was 12, his father died of pneumonia. When he was 13 he left school to become a printer's apprentice. Then he got a job at his brother Orion's newspaper as a printer and editorial assistant. This is where Samuel found he enjoyed writing.

-When he turned 17 he left his home in Hannibal and took up a printers job in St. Louis. Then he became a river pilots apprentice and later became a licensed river pilot in 1858.

The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer

-The Character Tom Sawyer was based off of Mark Twain as a child when he lived in Hannibal. Also his two school mates John Briggs and Will Bowen.

-The book is about a boy who lives with his Aunt Polly gets in trouble for fighting at school and his Aunt makes him paint the fence as punishment. Tom falls in love with this new girl in town named Becky Thatcher. Him and his friend sneak down to the graveyard and witness a murder from the grave robbers.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

-This book is about how Huck uses the money he got from the treasure Tom and him found. He end up signing the money over to Judge Thatcher and his dad takes him down the river to live a life in poverty. Huck fakes his own death and escapes to a nearby island where he meets an escaped slave named Jim. Tom comes and teams up with Huck to help free Jim but Tom is shot in the act. Jim is finally freed because Miss Watson freed him in her will when she died two months earlier.
