Principal's Corner #10

Big picture

Welcome Back!

I hope each and every one of you were able to find time to relax with your friends and family. As I mentioned before the break, we are fortunate we work in a career that forces us to take a break. As my family spent 5 days in San Diego, it became very apparent to me how fortunate we are to have these breaks. During this time, I was able to be 100% present with my family. Whereas my husband had to continue to read emails and take phone calls; his career doesn't allow him much opportunity to take a break; my job does. This is something I have often taken for granted. Regardless, our family definately appreciated the much needed family time. It's amazing how 5 days in one hotel room can bring a family together! In the end, I am thankful our family had this time together, and that I had time to reset or refocus on the work we do each and every day. Sometimes it is easy to get off track and lose sight of purpose, but it is these breaks that help me relocate my due north, what's best for kids. So, as we return to COT this week, let's remember why we do what we do, and make it great for every child, every day.

Thank you for all you do to make a difference.

Need your help

We are having issues closing our portable walls in the cafeteria and need your help. Please talk to all of our students about not leaning up against or pushing the portable walls during lunch. Thank you!

School Accountability Committee

At this point, I do not have one SAC teacher representative. I've updated the form so you can have the option to committ to one (or more) of the SAC meetings. We are required to have at least one teacher on our SAC. Thank you in advance for committing your time to our SAC. Our first SAC Meeting is this Thursday, October 25th 6:00-7:00.

Communication

Thank you for all of the time and energy you put into writing weekly or monthly communications with our families - IT MATTERS. I also appreciate you sending us a copy of your communication prior to it going out to families. Once we approve your communication, there is no need to include us when you send it out to your families. Again, thank you for all you do to share information with our families, and remember, at a minimum, you should be sending monthly communication home.

Social Studies CMAS test (given in 4th grade on a 3 year cycle) is not a Social Studies test, but rather a reading and writing assessment with Social Studies content. It assesses critical thinking and problem solving skills. In CCSD, 27.2% of students are performing in the college and career readiness range. Social Studies needs to be integrated into other content areas at all grade levels so that students have more opportunities to think critically about and respond to different topics.

The CMAS test announcement of when schools will be administering the Ravens Social Studies test will be made in October.

CCSD is working to increase awareness and inclusivity with cultural ideas and concepts for indigenous students. See Natalie if you are interested in the Indigenous Voices class and/or implementation group. The class starts 11/6 and will be 6 sessions. Donna Chrisjohn is a great resource in this area and is available to present to students.

Check out this link to learn about and interact with the new content standards. They will be assessed starting in Spring of 2021. http://www.cde.state.co.us/standardsandinstruction
