Panther Press

for the Week of August 21st

The Eclipse

As I emailed out to the faculty earlier, after discussing the situation with Dr. Vacca, we will NOT be going outside to view the eclipse on Monday. Any class that wishes to view the eclipse should use the approved Live Stream link from NASA. I list it again below:

All classes will remain inside during 6th period (including PE). There is a concern about students looking directly at the sun during the eclipse and the liability it may incur. There are significant questions about the quality of the "eclipse glasses" that have been made available especially in light of the recalls of the entire stock that some schools in our district have received.

Reminders from the Principal

Make sure you are reading the Panther Press each week and planning accordingly. The first unit assessments, Lesson Plans and Parent Contacts are due August 26 via EMAIL to your designated administrator. Lesson plans should cover through September 8 and parent contacts through August 25. Math teachers see Ms Pezeshkmehr for the lesson plan template. LDC teachers (English, Science, Social Studies, ect...) see Ms Hoggle/Ms Sears for the lesson plan template. We will talk more about unit assessment requirements in our first two faculty meetings. Do not forget that all teachers are required to administer a unit assessment every 4.5 weeks and they must be labeled as a unit assessment in your gradebook.

All grade level teachers are expected to be in attendance on their grade level parent night so make plans now.

The first faculty meeting will be August 22. The expectation is that all teachers will be in the conference room (or meeting location) within 10 minutes of the tardy bell so that we can begin on time.

September is Attendance Month so please begin stressing to students the importance of being at school every day. We are working on an incentive based on attendance that will also help our numbers for staffing next school year. Students will have an opportunity to exempt a semester diagnostic if they meet 2 of 3 options. One option will revolve around attendance in the month of September. Another option that has been discussed (but not settled on) emphasizes classwork/homework averages. The third option is still up in the air so be prepared to share next week in faculty meeting.

The current Panther Pass Menu will be published to parents next week in the 1st Nine Weeks Newsletter as well as on the school website and Facebook page.

I need to remind ALL staff members of a couple of things: 1) all staff members are required to remain on campus during the work day unless they have permission from an administrator to leave (teachers must sign out in the front office and classified must clock out), 2) All staff are responsible for electronic communications and items shared through the google platform. A copy of the current staff handbook for HMS is on the google drive. We will be adding additional documents as the year progresses. I did not read my email or did not know how to access the google folders is not an acceptable excuse.
