Information on the operating system, UNIX.

UNIX is systems software that has evolved from the early years of computing. It can be used by different types of computers such as mainframes as well as PC’s. It uses a GUI like Windows but it also makes use of a command line interface.

Here are some of the features of UNIX systems software:

- It is written in the programming language of C

- It is a multi-programming operating system

- It can be used to run hundreds of terminals

UNIX is quite difficult for first time users to use and tends to be used more by computer professionals than ordinary users. Universities are likely to use UNIX as are internet service providers (ISPs).
