Our Learning- September 16, 2016

This week, we:

Reading:

*learned how to get information about characters, setting, and major events in stories through the words and the pictures

*practiced making predictions within a story

*explored a dictionary and an encyclopedia

Work work:

*learned about the –am word family

*worked with our spelling words for the week

*continued to practice in our handwriting book

Writing:

*learned about possessive nouns such as Mrs. Granger's class and Jake's pencil

*started a new "small moment" piece of writing

*worked on telling our story in small steps

*practiced making our characters show feelings and thoughts

*continued to learn strategies that help us when writing unknown words

Math:

*used tens frames, number lines, and pictures to help solve math problems

*worked on addition and subtraction word problems

Science:

*studied the temperature and weather patterns of the week

*learned about weather tools: thermometer, windsock, wind vane, and rain gauge

News

CogAT testing for first graders will be on Wednesday, Sept. 21-Friday, Sept. 23. Please make sure your child goes to bed early before testing, eats a good breakfast, and arrives at school on time for testing. Due to the testing schedule, there will be no lunch visitation on testing days.

Important Information

Please see the information in the Friday folder about the Book Fair. We will visit the Book Fair for browsing on Monday, Sept 26. The students will bring home their wish lists on that day. Our buying day is Friday, Sept. 30 from 10:00-10:20. The Book Fair will also be open on Early Release days during conferences for parents who wish to shop.

Reminders

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is starting soon. Watch for a letter soon about great apps and activities that you can download at home.

Homework

All homework and book logs are due back on Thursday each week. Please make sure your child's book log is completely filled out and signed so our class gets credit for the logs. Let's get 100%!
