First week of September

We can't believe it is already September! It was fun starting a new month together and watching our classroom calendar change. The students have truly started building close friendships with one another and it is amazing to watch our class community become stronger each day.

All About Me

This week we continued our “All About Me” unit. We finished up a beautiful book that the children have been working on for two weeks! Their books will be in their Friday folders, so be sure to check them out.

We read some fantastic stories this week. In Hippo-Not-Amus and Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon we learned that we should be proud of who we are and all of our accomplishments. We created a class book in which each child wrote something they can do. Some of our creations said, “I can help” or “I can tap”. We also had so much fun reading Giraffes Can't Dance! We learned to make our own unique giraffes and painted a beautiful background for our giraffes to live on.

We also began our phonics program this week, Words Their Way. We explored the -ad and -an families and loved using our bead blenders to hear each sound in the words. The students also learned to use their fingers to tap out the sounds of the words. Everyone did a great job sorting their new words and were excited to finally start using their phonics journals. We will continue this program throughout the year and your child’s journal will grow each week!

Math this week was very exciting! We began chapter one by exploring Venn diagrams and continued on to tally marks and pictographs. On Wednesday we created our own class pictograph where each child chose between a soccer ball, basketball, and football to show which sport was their favorite! After we completed the graph we soon learned that soccer was the class favorite, basketball came in second and only two of our friends like football the most! Our week ended with a fun “Munchy Math” where we tallied with pretzel sticks and Twizzlers. We counted some items in our classroom and instead of just writing our tallies, we used our special treats! The children will continue using this information into next week as we build on top of it with the new concepts of Chapter Two.

Book Buddies

We had our first Book Buddies experience as Kindergarteners this week! Everyone was familiar with the activity from pre-school, but they couldn't believe we would be having big kids from our own school come down to spend time with us. We welcomed Mrs. London's second grade class into our classroom Tuesday morning with warm smiles and greeted our book buddies with a hug, handshake, or high five. The room was full of soft whispers as everyone began reading and getting to know each other. We can't wait to see them again in two weeks!

Rosh Hashanah

We are so excited to celebrate and learn about Rosh Hashanah together. As a class we read Sammy Spider's First Rosh Hashanah and The World's Birthday together. They taught us about the important symbols that go along with the holidays, like shofars, round challahs, and apples dipped in honey. On Friday afternoon we concluded our fun week by having an apple and apple dipping taste test! We tried so many different flavors of apples and lots of different dipping sauces. Once everyone saw the Nutella sitting on the counter they knew which their favorite was going to be. Tasting all the apple slices made us very excited to bring home the apple plate we have been working on all week!
