Testing! Testing! Read All About it!

Our chance to take the state tests (also known as SBAC or Smarter Balanced Assessment) is almost here. We will be testing next week on Tuesday and Thursday and the following week on Tuesday and Thursday. ALL students must have headphones for these tests. Please be sure that your child has headphones or earbuds at school for these days. To help curb anxiety we will be reminding students to try their best, work hard and persevere. In your conversations with your child please encourage them with these same positive messages.

Math: Unit 7 is moving right along. We didn't quite master the skill of comparing fractions with unlike denominators, so we will spend a little more time on lesson 7.6. Then after lesson 7.7 we are going to take the first part of the unit assessment. The fourth grade team decided to break this assessment into two portions so that we could work around the state testing. We will also need to work in some test practice so that we make sure those skills are nice and sharp.

Social Studies: We are working to create national parks scrapbooks. The projects are looking so amazing. I will share some of them with you once we finish.

Reading: After our field trip to see “Sleeping Beauty” last week, we spent some time reviewing story elements using the play as an example. We focused on character traits, setting, plot events, problem/solution, and theme. We are continuing that review in the reading block as we continue to work through “The Cow’s Horn” in our Storyworks magazine.

Writing: Our work with narrative story elements during the reading block is a perfect companion to our current writing project. We have revisited narrative writing, reviewing how to set up a story and include all of the elements mentioned above. The students are excited about our fun topic – wacky shoes!
